View Full Version : Problems making .AVI files

My intial plan when I got into converting was to convert DVDs to .mpg files to produce VCDs. Unfortunately, that plan fell through as I've never successfully produced a working disc. So I pretty much quit that. I was, however, satisfied with being able to produce decent quality .avi files (it'll be cool to do again when I get another PSP ;) ).

But now I have a delimma. I really can't create a successful avi file anymore either. The order I normally worked was: ripping the DVD, producing an avi file with DVD2AVI, and then taking that AVI to VirtualDub and reworking from there. But about 4 months ago DVD2AVI started going bonkers on me. Like I said before I use to capture what I wanted and saved that as an AVI file from there, but soon it got to the point where it would act like it was producing a file, but when it finishes and I go to check on them, I see that the properties say that the file size is 0 kb. I tried a couple more times and finally quit entirely.

Out of boredom I tried to see if I could works some magic (or hope that a miracle occured) and tried again to convert mpeg2 files to AVI. Still, I had no luck. So I decided to see if my programs were out of date. I figured that was the reason they stopped working I guess. I've found updates for DVD2AVI, VirtualDub and I still haven't gotten the things to work (that and there were some major tweaks I did not like :sly: ). At this point I'm really annoyed with the entire process, but I still really want to do it.

Can anyone spare some suggestions for this Semi-newb? Thanks in advance...

Have you tried AutoGK? It's about as foolproof as it gets.

tried again to convert mpeg2 files to AVI.
Two other, simple, alternatives: VirtualDubMOD or MPEGMediator...

I've tried VDMod, but had problems getting the audio in (IIRC) and it wouldn't let me set up the aspect ratio I wanted. The title I'm working with now, just happens to be anamorphic widescreen, yet with VDMod, I'm only able to convert it to the 4:3 aspect ratio.

I'm looking into AutoGK, so hopefully that'll produce some results.

I've found a semi-satisfying experience with Pocket DivX Encoder, but am unable to capture the exact video I need (sometimes, I only go after a certain scene...).

Anyway thanks for the suggestions. :p Still, I wish someone knew what was going on with the old DVD2AVI.

I haven't ever tried with dvd2avi. But winavi video converter (http://www.winavi.com) works pretty good. It can convert files to mpg/vcd/avi... Maybe you can download a free trial version to have a try.
Btw, if you want to make vcd, you'd better convert your file to vcd instead of mpg.

Have you as yet tried MPEGMediator?. It DEFINITELY will allow you to set aspect ratio...
