View Full Version : The Matrix & DVDDecrypter

Hi there,
I've got a "The Matrix" zone 2 PAL DVD.
I have successfully decrypted this DVD in the past but but it was way looooong ago.
Yesterday I thought I would Decrypt it again to test a couple of AviSynth scripts on this "low light / high action movie".
I tried both DVDDecrypter and DVDFab Decrypter Free both latest versions.
Both did successfully rip the DVD but when I open the VOB files on MPC or any other soft player I see a clear desync problem.
It's right at the begining of the movie when Trinity is inside a small room getting arrested by regular cops.
There's a scene when she tries to knock down the cop by slowly jumping in front of him and then kicking him hard.
When watching the riped movie on MPC this scene repeats 2 or 3 times and then I get audio/video out of sync throughout the rest of the movie.
Playing the original DVD on both two SAPs the DVD plays just fine.
I know this has something to do with angles but I can't remember what to do because it was long ago when I last ripped this movie.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Rip it in IFO mode.

This was one of my first rips so I remember it well. I used DVD Decrypter to rip the full dvd to a folder in file mode with no angle processing. Then I used DVD Shrink to do a movie-only save to another folder, cutting out unwanted stuff like subtitles and soundtracks.
Still plays well on my Maxell DVD-R.

I have experience with this movie (ripped it several times) you HAVE to rip it in IFO mode, its the only way to aviod that problem.

The only problem is that I have tried both IFO and FILE modes with no success.
In IFO mode Trinity doesn't keep spinning in the air when she kicks the cop but there is still a desync.
Here is a picture of when she is about to walk over the walls...
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/5530/matrixdesync3cf.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
This was captured after a IFO Mode decrypt with DGIndex to BMP and afterwards I saved it to JPEG with PaintDotNet with 95% quality.
See for yourselves.
I get half an image from the cop and half an image from Trinity...
After this video and audio are out of sync.
Not to mention the crazy macroblocks.
Thanks to imageshack for hosting the pic ;)
Any help will be much appreciated.

Try the latest beta of DGIndex.
Is your disk damaged?
john3voltas
11th December 2005, 03:28
Nope my DVD disc is perfect, not even a single "light" scratch on it because I use to make copies and keep the originals in a safe place.
And it works perfectly on the SAP 'cause I tested it.
I don't think the problem is in DGMPGDec because when I watch the extracted VOBs with MPC I can see that the video/audio get out of sync after this frame.
So I think it's safe to say that there's nothing wrong with DGMPGDec 1.4.5 (the one I'm using) and that it's down to the ripping/decrypting process...
I'll decrypt again with DVDDecrypter's defaults and post the log for you although I can't remember seeing any errors on it last time around.
But thanks for the tips you've given me so far.

the log shows you're ripping everything.. you mustn't do that.. I've been telling people that for almost 6 years now. There is nothing wrong at all with DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0, I just ripped Matrix less than a week ago using that version. Your screenshot shows exactly what you get if you do not rip in IFO mode.

Strange.
The log shows the method I used before using Shrink to make a movie-only copy. The gross distortions shown in the picture simply do not appear on my copy. I even dug it out and watched it again to prove that I'm not going mad.
I don't understand why there should be such a difference, unless the single-dvd version and double-dvd versions are produced differently. The only other thing I can recall is that, at the time I ripped Matrix, I was using a slow AMD800 machine that was incapable of reading a dvd as fast as shown in the log. Could a slower read-speed make a difference? I doubt it but who knows?
Sorry, john3. Not much help.

I know and I've been doing IFO mode ripping for more than 3 years.
But since there were people asking me to go into FILE mode...
Believe me or not I have already tried dozens of times during the last couple of days to rip this movie in IFO mode but with no success.
I shall immediatly re-rip the movie in IFO and post the log.
And for the record I don't think there is anything wrong with DVDDecrypter.
I am quite sure that this is a problem with the interface between the chair and the keyboard.
On the other hand I believe there is something VERY wrong with DVDFab Decrypter Free 2.9.6.2..
I shall post more info on this other subject too.

Thanks you all for all the assistance you've been giving me.
As promissed here's a DVDD log in IFO mode Main Movie Pgc only.
This time I used "file splitting" equal to "auto" so that I would end up with a single VOB file.
Now Trinity only does the jump scene once and I dont get half frames when she's walking over walls and being shot by the cop.
And no more macro blocks flashing on those frames.
But there is still a video/audio desync on the extracted IFO/VOB.
When she finishes beating the crap out of the cops, she picks up the phone to talk with Morpheus and there I can see and hear that video is way before audio.
This doesn't happen when I load the DVD into MPC.
I haven't tried encoding this with HCEnc but I don't see the point of doing that.
If the source is bad the target will be bad.
And it's pretty logical now that DGMPGDec has nothing to do with this.

Try uninstalling DVDDecryptor, then reinstalling it and don't change any settings, just put it in IFO mode and rip the main movie file and see where that gets you. If its a setting related problem this should fix it, and if its a technical problem with DVDD this will most likely fix it.

Rip the movie in Filemode and use Pgcdemux to demux by PGC or let Pgcdemux create a PGC Vob
This scene is the first ILVU scene in Matrix (interleaved VobIDs for the white rabbit)

@john3voltas
Hi!
If memory serves me correctly, I created a perfectly synchronized DivX-compressed .AVI of "Matrix" "way back when" as follows:
1) Ripped the entire DVD in "File" mode (I used either "CladDVD" or "DVD Decrypter" back then)
2) Copied the -0- byte file(s) from the original DVD to the folder containing the rip
3) Converted to DivX-compressed .AVI using FlaskMPEG to "Open DVD" and selecting the proper .IFO...

Oops, say it again buddy?
You mean I should rip in File Mode in DVDD and then use PGCDemux on it?
Could you give some more instructions please, because I really don't know PGCDemux and how it works.
I know it can extract subs in SUP mode for IfoEdit/Muxman and that it will extract the AC3 tracks.
But in terms of video streams I thought it would only extract M2V files out of a VOB.
Care to give me some more instructions?

This time I used "file splitting" equal to "auto" so that I would end up with a single VOB file. The only way to ensure that you end up with a single .VOB is to set file splitting to "None."
In IFO mode, right-click in the Input window and select "Expand all." There may be another PGC set that's a bit shorter than the one it auto-selects which will contain the proper angles for the main movie only.
john3voltas
11th December 2005, 20:33
You're right.
That was a typo.
I used "None" in the dropdown box.
I'm currently re-ripping in File Mode to use bigotti5's PGCDemux advise.
Actually it just finished.
I just did an Expand All on the input window but the only thing that changed is that now I can see the PGCs inside VTS_01 and VTS_03 when before I was just able to see all PGCs inside VTS_02.
BTW here are the contents of VTS_02:
PGC 1 [02:10:46]
PGC 2 [00:00:12]
PGC 3 [00:00:00]
PGC 4 [00:00:00]
PGC 5 [00:00:00]
PGC 6 [02:10:46]
PGC 7 [00:00:31]
PGC 8 [00:02:38]
PGC 9 [00:01:07]
PGC 10 [00:00:58]
PGC 11 [00:03:24]
PGC 12 [00:01:10]
PGC 13 [02:10:46]
PGC 14 [02:10:46]
PGC 15 [02:10:46]
PGC 16 [00:00:00]
PGC 17 [00:00:00]
PGC 18 [00:00:00]
I've been extracting VTS_02 - PGC 01 everytime I extracted in IFO mode.
I guess this is the right choice even because looking at the Stream Processing tab this is the only PGC that has everything inside it, namely, the video track, both English and Spanish audio tracks and the whole 10 subtitle tracks.
I guess I've been doing the right thing.
I can't remember all these problems to rip The Matrix a couple of years ago when I received it as a gift ???...
TIA guys

In addidion to demux video, audio and subs (.sup) Pgcdemux can create a Vob from PGC
Matrix is a multistory PGC movie with ILVUs (not multiangles, VobID4 and VobID5 in your case) and therefore you see Trinity jump twice
john3voltas
11th December 2005, 20:41
So you mean that I should create a VOB out of PGC 01 that is inside VTS_02?
But how do I tell it not to extract VobID4 and VobID5?
And howcome nobody remembers going through all this pain?
Even some guys ripped this movie weeks ago?
TIA

But how do I tell it not to extract VobID4 and VobID5
e.g.
PGC 1 uses VOB-IDs: 2,3,4,6,7,8,10,11,12,14,15,16,17,19,20,21,23......
PGC 6 uses VOB-IDs: 2,3,5,6,7,9,10,11,13,14,15,16,18,19,20,22,23,24,
Pgcdemux will select used VobIDs and demux it the right way or create a vob with only the used VobIDs

@bigotti5
Hi pal.
I just finished running my movie through PGCDemux with the options:
- Mode by PGC
- Create a PGC VOB
- Domain -> Titles
- PGC # 01 --> 02:10:46:10
But all I came up with is exactly the same thing as extracting this movie in IFO mode in DVDDecrypter.
Yep, this way Trinity doesn't kick the cop x times but when that scene ends the audio and the video have a gap of more than one second of desync.
But you just showed me a good way of doing this if DVDD didn't exist and I had to do it with DVDFab that only does File Mode ;).
Anyone else cares to enlighten me on what I'm doing wrong?
The DVD plays wonderfuly in both my SAPs and it doesn't one single tiny little bit of something similar to a scratch.
I've been trying to rip this movie for more than 48 hours...
In 48 hours I would have ripped more than 50 regular movies with a leg tied behind my back  .
Any help will be welcome.

PGC6 is with white rabbit
I think your problem is that the ILVU flags remains in the vobs and confuses your player.
Instruct pgcdemux to demux all streams and reauthor the m2v and your preferred audio stream with ifoedit and check if the gap remains.

I also had the same problem the white rabbit title (should) be extracted correctly in DVD Decryptor if you select 'multi-angle processing' and 'retain angle 1'. I've used this option just to be safe ever since. Of course you could rip the regular title, but it's still good to know.

Then let's see if I get it straight.
Both PGC 01 and PGC 06 are good to choose either from DVDDecrypter or from PGCDemux, right?
But that way I still haven't solved my problem.
Even choosing from DVDD in IFO mode I get a desync when I reach that part of the movie.
And when I use DVDD in FILE mode and I use PGCDemux to demux a set of VOB(s) with PGC 01 I also have a desync when I reach that part of the movie.
I would say both methods do exactly the same.
Again, when I say that I get a desync I'm talking about watching the DVDD extracted VOB(s) in MPC v6.4.8.7.
I never encoded the movie because I thought "put crap in and crap will come out for sure".
At the end of the day: what else can I really do?
You guys ripped it yourselves without finding any issues.
Some of you even say you did it without the need for PGCDemux.
Some did it in FILE mode, some did it in IFO mode...
I am definitly not a newbie and I get the feeling that something is really wrong with this movie.
My hardware and software are ok because in the middle of this I have taken another DVD and ripped it without a single glitch.
As always, any help will be much appreciated.

The issue with the dvd is that PGC6 includes multiple refferences to the same source of video. These sections of the movie branch off, they include both the original movie and the a copy of original movie with links to the special features.
the problem is most mpeg2 processing tools is that they can't tell the difference between the two streams and try to read them both leaving redundant and scrambled sections throughout the movie.
that is what the 'retain angle 1' option is for on DVD Decryptor.
PGC1 doesn't have this problem as it includes only the one stream.

But all I've been extracting in IFO mode is PGC 01.
So if you say that PGC 01 doesn't have that problem why do I experience the desync issues?

No need to encode - just demux and reauthor with ifoedit or muxman and your sync problem is gone

Thanks pal,
I ran my FILE mode extracted files, ran them through PGCDemux, selected output as VOB from PGC 13 and guess what?
Same issue.
EDITED:
From the moment Trinity smack the chubby cop in his face until the end of the movie I get a major desync.
I'm running out of options but now I'll extract with DVDD in IFO mode just PGC 13 and see if it gets any better.
BTW this way you just advised me I will keep Main Movie video track, both English and Spanish audio tracks and a single SUP track which I think is the English one.
That means I would loose the PTG subs but I will do what it takes to get rid of the desync and afterwards I'll see what's still missing.
How the hell did I backup The Matrix when I received it as a gift  .

The thing is, if you have the IFOs, it plays just fine in MPC. If you ripped it, MPC has problems with the VOBs.. but do not conclude from that that a rip will have problems. I have 6 Matrix rips, all done from a PGC1 rip in DVD Decrypter, and all are prefectly synch (using 6 different codecs and two different containers).
So, if you want to make a Divx-like backup, rip PGC1 and process as usual, things will be fine in the end. If you want to do a shrink like backup, use shrink directlyfrom the DVD, or make an ISO from the DVD using DVDDec, mount that and use Shrink on it. The same applies for any other backup that in the end should return a DVD.
Sometimes, it pays not to think too much and just do what you have to do (preferably following my guides) and you'll get what you want.

Hi setarip_old,
The original DVD plays just fine with MPC.
I have 6 Matrix rips, all done from a PGC1 rip in DVD Decrypter, and all are prefectly synch (using 6 different codecs and two different containers).
Well but maybe you did it from a zone1 NTSC DVD.
Mine is a zone2 PAL DVD.
Maybe it could have been authored differently from your's.
I don't know...
I just can't remember going through all this a couple of years ago...
So, if you want to make a Divx-like backup...The same applies for any other backup that in the end should return a DVD.
Nope, no DivX/XviD in my backyard.
At least for now.
I'm encoding mainly to MPEG2 either with HC or with TMPG.
Oh, and all the DVDs are really mine ;)
Sometimes, it pays not to think too much and just do what you have to do (preferably following my guides) and you'll get what you want.
I did.
Although I wasn't reading it, I actually did it just as you wrote in your guides.
The thing is, after it fails you twice using the same approach, you start trying different approaches just to see if it helps.
EDIT: Just finished encoding a small clip of the IFO mode PGC 01 that shows desync problems.
Actually the encoded mini clip of that scene shows no signs of desync whatsoever.
It's amazing how the source shows problems and the target doesn't...
And this explains why I didn't find any issues a couple of years ago when I 1st encoded this movie.
Anyway, thanks to all who helped in this thread.

What I said - the remaining ILVU Flags in the vobs confuses your player
Full demux of PGC1 and reauthor with ifoedit or muxman solves the sync problems
