i bought blank DVD-R on the recommendation from the guy at the store, but now i am wondering what the heck..? the backup i made yesterday only plays on 1 of our dvd players..and it is a much newer model than the others..
can i get recommendations on what "type" generally work on most all dvd players please? i was told that the "-R" designation would play in "every" dvd player..
obviously i was misled...
what do you all use..?
thank you,
birdie:)

Take a look at this for compatability issues.

Or, to determine the capabilities/limitations of your DVD burner, as well as media compatibility, go to:
www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters
(If necessary, open the Device Manager in the Control Panel to determine the make and model number)
To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model of standalone DVD player, as well as media compatibility, go to:

On top of the advice and links you've already received, I'd add that once you find a brand of media that's compatible with both your burner and home playback devices, catch it on sale and stock up. Many of the burning problems we see here are caused by people running out of media, then buying the first thing they see at firesale prices.
Don't panic if you have the occasional burn failure from a box of reliable media. My failure ratio has improved over the past couple of years, but I still get 2 or 3 ''duds" out of a 100 unit cakebox.

I've always found DVD-R to be the most compatible, so I wouldn't say you were misled. There are lots of variables involved in the case of compatibility, it'll take some work to find what works best in your situation.
Keep in mind, the method used to create the backup is also important!
