I hope I'm asking this question correctly...
I have a bunch of low quality/ small sized VOB's, around 1-1.5 gb each. Due to volume of them I just want to copy them from disc (these are not encrypted and were created at home) to my hard drive and play them back from there.
As I understand it, the video in the VOB is mpeg2 with ac3 audio. I would like to change the container to avi or mpeg2 without recompressing.
What is the best way to do this?

The easy way is to change the extension from VOB to MPG
Presto!

Thanks for the reply.
That kinda works. The only issue that on playback I cannot scroll through the video, it seems to not detect or know where different parts of the film are. For example, the movie is 1 hour long but zoomplayer only report the file to be 17sec long. Any way around this?

1) There's no way to change an MPEG-2 to .AVI without recompressing
2) Since .VOBs can contain multiple audiostreams and subtitles and, if I remember correctly, padding, you'd be fortunate to have a perfectly working standalone MPEG-2 file by simply changing the extension to "MPG". From what you say now, you've apparently run into a problem in this regard. For each separate .VOB, I'd suggest that you load the .VOB into "TMPGEnc" (Different than "TMPGEnc DVD Author") as follows:
TMPGEnc>>File>>MPEGTools>>Demultiplex
Save the videostream as an "M2V" file and then save the audiostream of your choice as (presumably) ".AC3".
Then reverse the procedure, as follows:
TMPGEnc>>File>>MPEGTools>>Multiplex - and load in your "M2V" and ".AC3" files. then save with a new filename (with an extender of ".MPG")
Note: When in the "Demultiplex" mode, you may have to first enter "*.*" (without the quotation marks) in order for the program to show the .VOBs
BTW I'm curious to know why and how you created the .VOBs in the first place?
