I have spent a lot of time recently working on transcoding files to MP4 such that they play "out-of-the-box" on Quicktime. I've gotten some good guidance in this forum (my old thread ain't dead yet!) and am now able to do most of the stuff I want. However, since I'm building an app that is going to spit out X-platform video and Flash has a 98% penetration rate, I'm wondering if FLV is a better option.

To that end, I was wondering if some of you might be able to enlighten me regarding the pros and cons of FLV and how it stacks up against MP4. (I realize it's not as robust, but my users will not be dealing with video that has subtitled tracks, etc.)

Thanks,
David

there are also browser java plugins that allow people to play mp4 files "without plug-ins, pop-up media players or complex explanations"

Don't you need the flash plugin to play flash?

Just 'cos most people already have it doesn't make it not a plugin...
