View Full Version : DVD burner no longer recognizes CD's

My burner (DVD +- 8x) has stopped recognizing cd's. Since the problem started I have completely reformatted and installed a fresh OS (XP SP2). Any ideas?

Flashing new firmware on the burner might help.

also please try this ... connect it alone in your mobo's secondary channel as master/primary drive, if still problematic, then connect it as slave/secondary drive in the primary channel, (in the same cable of your c: drive) . and even before all these, try to clean the drive head/lens, by using a drive head cleaner cd/dvd kit , if one is available closeby . may be a new replacing cable (80pin) will fix it . or, its really dead/failed.

have i got it wrong? i thought first, your drive stopped recognizing cd, dvd both . but, is it not recongnizing any CDs, but recognizes DVDs only ?

Yes it recognizes dvd. Cd's are the only problem.

Did you happen to install Roxio?

No. I'm not a Roxio fan. I have completely rebuilt my System since the problem cropped up. The only thing that is the same is the Hard dririve and burner. I formatted the HD and installed a fresh copy of the OS. I am hoping it's not the burner. I went on the MS site but the only discuss CD burners with this problem. Tried it anyway. No luck.
