View Full Version : can't capture audio from DV cam w/ VDub

I recently bought a Panasonic DV vid camera. I installed their software and tried to cap my 1st vid clip... turns out their software is limited to 3-min clips :mad: Why would they force such a stupid limitation??

So I decided to try to cap it w/ VDubMod instead. Everything seemed to be working, until I tried to play back the clip. The video was fine, but there was no sound.

Luckily the clip was only about 5mins long, so I capped it thru their software in 2 pieces, then used VDubMod to edit, join, and compress it to Xvid. So it turned out fine in the end, but it was a hell of a lot more work than it should have been. So why can VDM cap the video but not the audio?

BTW, I'm using VDM 1.5.10, and I also tried VDub 1.4.5

Does the cam have a IEEE1394 / Firewire / iLink etc. connection? If so then forget their software and capture with WinDV / DVIO after connecting your camera to the PC via 1394.
Forget VDub(Mod) - its totally unnessecary to use with a DV camera that has 1394. With that you can just copy the stream (Audio & Video) from the tape to harddisk without any loss in quality.

Are those programs that are built into WinXP? I'm running Win98, so I don't think I have them.

WinDV is freeware and should work with your operating system get it at
http://windv.mourek.cz/or from a mirror site-listed under tools at videohelp.com

Note that you can choose to 'capture' as either type1 or type2 avi

Be sure to set a new capture file each time you open the program. (Not necessary on subsequent captures if the program stays open), so you don't overwrite your files.
