"re-encode" a divx-file with strange playback-errors?

Hello!

I have a Divx-File which has strange playback-errors:
It is a black&white movie which is somehow colored with only one overlayed colour a time.(e.g. night: everything looks dark blue, day: yellow or red)

Often at the point when the colour changes, I get big quadrangels of the next color while the rest of the screen stands still in the old color, that takes about one second, then playback is fine again.
When I play that position again, everything is ok, and that shows me that the file itsself has no problems.
There are also no problems with the Codec, because these Problems happen on PC (Divx 6) and DVD-Player (I think Divx 5.x, because not the newest one), and also when decoding with Nero Digital - Codec.

So I would like to reencode that file, perhaps as OGM, and see if the Problem is still there.
By the way, I also would like to make the Movie really black and white, where can I make those settings? It should just look as if the wrong connector (Composite/S-Video) between PC and TV is used, when all the color is gone.

1) What is the original source material (DVD, etc.)?

2) Does the original source material exhibit the same behavior?

3) What software and procedures did you use when you originally encoded this DivX-compressed .AVI?

I didn't produce the Movie myself, but downloaded it.
It is "Nosferatu", a DVD-Rip.
I think it isn't illegal because you can download the movie also on archive.org, it is from 1922. But the archive.org-version is bad quality, so I took the other one from usenet.

All I know is that it is encoded with Divx, an .avi-file.

It sounds more like a codec problem on your end. Uninstalling any other codecs or packs and installing the codec pack from the main Doom9 download page should correct your problem.

I could try that, but I want to play the film on my DVD-Player which usually plays all Divx/Xvid/OGM formats perfectly.
So I would like to re-encode the film.

I could try that, but I want to play the film on my DVD-Player which usually plays all Divx/Xvid/OGM formats perfectly.Have you tried playing it on your standalone? If it plays ok, your PC's codecs are the problem. If it doesn't, re-encoding is only going to make it worse.

Yes, I tried it on my satndalone-Player, on PC with Divx 6.0, and on another PC which has only NeroDigital-Codec, and every time I do have exactly the same result with the picture changing too slowly and in quadrangles.
However, this problem is not at a certain time in the film, but happens irregulary. I have seen other films before which had a mistake and there, I saw that mistake everytime I played that particular time of the film. But here it is different, the file seems to be alright, but is somehow "difficult" to decode.

The question is: When I decode it to another format like just mpeg, is the same way of decoding used that is used during playback? Because then, I have no chance to change anything, because the mistakes would be also in the new format, but this time "fixed" to certain places/times!
