Welcome to the Forum:

Re-reading the Forum Rules at the top of the page will tell you that we don't ask what's "best", here. What's best for you may not be best for someone else.

If you're just starting out, DVD Shrink would be a good choice for backing up your collection to DVD discs. Take a look at the DVD Backkup Guides (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm) page; there, you'll find Doom9's Shrink guide as well as others you might want to give a try. Another fine resource for Shrink guides can be found at www.dvdshrink.info.

If you get stuck, get all of your facts together and post them, you'll get help.

hi slidersftp and welcome to the forum!

although some people consider it a matter of semantics, one of the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) specifically states that: 12) How NOT to post on this forum:

Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you! so if you could please edit the title of this thread it would be appreciated.

i would also highly recommend that you spend a bit of time reading up on the dvd basics (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dvd-basics.htm) guide section at doom9.

please clarify which mpeg format you require? mpeg 1, 2, 4 ????
dvd is already in mpeg 2 format ...

good luck

Let me make myself a little more clear. I am aware of how to backup a dvd to dvd+-R and hard disk. I'm also aware of how to go from DVD9 to DVD5 using DVD Shrink.

What I would like to do is convert a DVD to AVI. I just want to watch some of those DVD's on a work computer which only has windows media player 9 with standard codecs. Basically I want to make themn smaller also and bring 700meg AVI files into work.

Thanks

Hi!

After "ripping" your DVD to your hard drive with DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 (will handle the vast majority of DVDs) and downloading a DivX codec, you can use any number of conversion programs to convert your DVD files to DivX-compressed .AVI.

My personal favorite is MPEG Mediator - but if you do a better search here, you'll readily discover references (especially in the DivX and XviD- related sub-forums) to the many other tools used for this purpose...

Please take a look through Doom9's Guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm). AVI is covered in detail in the DVD Backup to MPEG-4 section.

Thanks Noticed your post and your specific point about "... only has windows media player 9 with standard codecs". Just to clarify, are you are not allowed to load the XVid or Divx codec on this machine? That info is critical to give you a proper answer.

If you are allowed, then AutoGK using the XVid codec would work well for you. Hard to find anything that can do a better job and is designed to be simple to use.

If you are stuck with using wmv then I suggest you google something like "dvd to wmv". Also let folks here know if this is a limitation and I am sure you will get some help. Good luck.
