I know the basic difference between NTSC and PAL (525/625 and 25/29 fps etc.), I have seen people who have ripped NTSC versions of DVDs, as well as PAL.

But if I was to burn an NTSC rip onto a DVD and play it at home (UK), what difference would there be in the picture? I mean I can still watch it?

Well I am in NTSC land but it was my understanding that almost all DVD playback units in PAL land had a button for NTSC material...does your DVD remote or unit have a NTSC setting on it?

Nope, I put the DVD in and it plays fine. This was the question I really had.

Do I really need to bother worrying if a disk is NTSC or PAL, won't 99% of DVD player play bth these days anyway? And if it was NTSC, would I notice any difference (I was thinking as the FPS is different it may run at an extremely smaller different speed)

No TV I have seen cannot play contents at NTSC frequency (60 Hz). However, if your dvd or tv does not support ntsc, you'll get a black & white picture. That's pretty much all you have to worry about =)

yeah, the only worry is if the DVD player isn't helping you out (huh) by doing a really crappy NTSC-PAL conversion. i've never seen a good one in a standalone DVD player, and almost all PAL TVs that actually have AV inputs (excluding composite which should be avoided) can play back NTSC material in any colour system (NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43 and PAL 60 are pretty much all supported, so it's just a matter of telling your DVD player which to use).
