I am completely new to this side of the burner so really need some help.
I have one pioneer cd/dvd drive and have just got a copy of dvd shrink,
now I've done all the copying part when I inserted a blank rw dvd it came
up with an error messege about video ts files and saved the film to a
temporary dvd file on my desktop.. there are 4 vob files VTS_01-1 to 4,
2 IFO files and 2 BUP files and a default file.
this is as far as I can get  I can play the film on my media player though!
I have a copy of nero but when i try to add all the files then burn the film
it takes about 20 mins then comes up with an error message saying poineer
illegal disk? (or something of that order)
Please please help me I have been trying to get this on to the dvd for a week
now and am about to pull my hair out!
Thank you

Hi & welcome to the board,

what is the exact message? "poineer
illegal disk? (or something of that order)" is not too precise.

Have you tried a different blank? Perhaps it is a problem of the DVD-RW - try to erase it in Nero (full erase) and then try again.

Regards,
Steve

Hi thankyou millions for getting back to me :D I have tried a few different types of blank media dvd-r and dvd-rw but it doesn't seem to make any difference. i'm opening up nero on my desktop, select express, dvd, and make a dvd-video, add all the temporary files and burn...but it goes through the process of formatting starting the burn then it says..
'PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
illegal disc
Burn process failed at 2.4x(3,312kb/s)'
I hope that explains it a bit better

RW media is infamous for throwing errors and being unreadable by various brands of standalone players. If you want to use RW's for testing purposes, I'd suggest you totally erase the disc before initiating the burn.

In your first post to this thread, you say that you can "play the film in my media player", so I assume it plays through one of your pc's software players, but not in your standalone. This points to (one of) the problem/s with RW's that I just spoke of.

I don't use Nero Express, but have pulled it up out of my 6 Ultra Edition to take a look; some of the commands may be slightly different if our versions aren't the same, but they should be really close.

First off, after you've set your Shrink rip up and are ready to "Backup", I'd select "ISO image" as the target for my Shrink file. Give it a uniquely identifiable name so that you can easily track it down through Nero's explorer.

After that stage is complete, pull up Express and click on the "Disc Image or Saved Project" option and navigate to and load the ISO file that you've created with Shrink.

Basically, all you're doing is telling Shrink to create an ISO/image file and where to put it, then telling Nero Express where to find it. After you hit the "Burn" button, you should be in business.

You can also compare your standalone player against this database for media that's been checked out by others:

I tried to totally erase the disc a few times but it ejects the disc without any message and doesn't complete erasing.
When I said I can play the film in media player i just drag and drop the one of the VTS files into it and it plays the whole movie I have never actually gotten the movie onto a dvd at all. I don't have the movie at the mo my sister does so i just have the files on my hard drive in the temp file is there anything else I can do?

I have tried a few different types of blank media dvd-r and dvd-rw
Try using either DVD+R or DVD+RW media...

Thanks... those are exactly the two I have been trying  I have now got a copy of dvd decrypter and imgburn and am trying that too but it won't let me select the files I have on my hard drive! I press select file then route out where they are but I have to highlight all files (*.*) it's not in all supported files if that helps maybe I did something wrong in shrink

Your postings are now confusing and conflicting. Are you using DVD-R and DVD-RW media or DVD+R and DVD+R media?

DVD Decrypter and IMGBurn will work ONLY with .ISO image files, NOT with DVD file "packages" (.IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs)

I can see what you mean there sorry... The only media i have been using is +r and +rw but the error message i get when trying to burn with nero is
'PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
illegal disc
Burn process failed at 2.4x(3,312kb/s)'
OH DEAR..... :o
does that mean I'm using the wrong discs and can only use - discs in my burner?

Here's another approach: Get the original disc back from your sister and start over again with DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and Nero. Or, whichever software you can work with. The media is not your entire problem.

If you get stuck whilst using any of your software app's, post on what you're using, what you've done, and what problems/errors you're getting. You'll get help, just do your homework and let the gang know what you've done.

[Edit]Did any of my first post make sense to you, or do you have any questions on my suggestions? Setting Shrink's "Target" as an image file (ISO) and then burning with Nero has never failed me. Not once.

Hi thanks for the last post but still no go! :(
I've tried it with a different movie (as my sister lives 200 miles away) and opened the disc in shrink, went through all proceedures and burnt as an ISO image file, opened imgburn, found the file, checked the blank media and clicked burn and it's just shown this on the log............
14:50:54 Failed to Write Sectors 768 - 799 - Power Calibration Area Error
14:50:54 Retrying (1 of 20)...

Its a pioneer dvd-rw and the media I tried using is dvd+r if that helps

Here's what Nero's FAQ has to say on Power Calibration Errors, take a look and see if any of this applies to your scenario. When you get error messages, include them right up front in your first post....ammck55:

9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

* Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
* Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
* Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
* Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
* Send the recorder in for service.

OMG!!! I think maybe I'm just not meant to be able to do this!
The calibration error appeared after I had the initial problems hence not including it in the first post.
I've updated the firmware and bought some new dvd's... Sony DVD-RW, i was using TDK DVD+R and Phillips DVD+RW. To begin with i tried to burn the ISO image created as suggester with nero but It came up with 'DVD compliance test failed the resultind dvd may be unplayable continue?' then it says the disc is not writable! how do I format a disc?
So i tried it with decrypter selected the ISO file again and i have an

I/O error!

OMG!!! I think maybe I'm just not meant to be able to do this!
Hang in there; you know how it is with any problem, you'll look back after it's fixed and say to yourself, "Now why didn't I think of that first?" Maybe...:)

Decrypter's I/O error is telling you that it can't even read the contents of the disc, most probably due to scratches, smudges, crud of some kind, etc. Look at the disc and see if this is the case. Sometimes, it's possible to clean the disc with plain ole water and a soft cloth; rub lightly outwards from the hub (hole in the middle), never in a circular motion around the disc. If the disc is so jacked up that you can't clean it, set it aside and pick another title.

Let's try to break this down into smaller chunks to find your problem. To make sure your programs are clean, uninstall and reinstall Decrypter, Shrink, and Nero, making sure you have the latest versions of the freeware programs available; check the Downloads page using the link out on the frontend of the Forum. (Use the D9 link at the top of this page.) If you get the I/O error after this, post back with the details. After cleaning up your software (and maybe, your discs?), try another test by going back to post #5 in this thread and following those instructions.

You've already stated that you have the latest firmware update for your burner, but do us a favor and supply this information:

Exact model number of your burner
Exact version of Nero
Exact list of the media you're using (in your latest test)
Title of the current movie that can't be read
Additionally, when you get an error message, hit the *printscreen* key and save the screenshot into your favorite photo editor and save it to file. This way, you don't have to remember the exact error message

Stay away from RW media until you get the problem figured out, it only complicates the scenario. Don't worry about making coasters, if you run all the way through Decrypter and Shrink without an error message, you're going to be fine. I always check my ISO files by mounting them first in Daemon, you can download it and employ this method, but if all this information is reaching your sensory overload point, don't worry about it. :)

If you're using Nero 6, or later, under the *Recorder* tab, there's an option for *Erase Rewritable Disc*.

If you continure to get power calibration errors in Nero, or your other burning app's, this could also indicate a problem with your burner as they told you in the Nero FAQ. Check the drive's cables. Have you had any other weirdness lately that might indicate that your pc's power supply is starting to wig out? Run a burner test and make sure that your burner is in good working order before knocking your head further. Pick any kind of file, maybe some of your favorite music and burn it off to CD, or, one of your RW discs that you can re-use.

Keep your facts tight and supply all information when asked and we can most likely figure this out.

Keep after it!....ammck55

Hi again and ... thanks again

All the discs I've been using are brand new and just out of the packet so can't be a problem with the actual discs.
I've only just installed decrypter, shrink and nero about two weeks ago and they're all the latest versions, I think as they're off mates.

Burner is PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
Nero is 6,0,0,9
Media is Sony-RW
The movie is Labyrinth (in Iso format now)

Since I upgraded the firmware and bought new discs I haven't had another power calibration error just the I/O error last posted I tried to erase my discs but they get ejected half way through?

As for the power possibly wigging out that could make sense as it's runnning real slow lately but then I do have a few dvd's backed up on it waiting to be burned that may be the cauze!
I'm in the middle of writing a cd now in itunes as suggested and thats all fine...All done
Could it be a problem with the burner and just dvd's possibly!?

I have just gone through trying to put the files I first posted about on to dvd with Nero..

With this file (robots-the dvd my sister has) I backed it up using shrink but selected the first option 'burn with nero' as I said I got a message to say 'all files were in a temporary dvd file'.
I found the file using nero added the files to the video-ts and selected burn but it is now saying 'drive is in use by another application' burn process failed!!

And I've also just tried to burn the iso (labyrinth) and it comes up with the same message!

Any help appreciated-again

If it's not one thing it's another :-( I might possibly juat buy another burner

As for the power possibly wigging out that could make sense as it's runnning real slow lately but then I do have a few dvd's backed up on it waiting to be burned that may be the cauze!First off, check to see if there's any room on your hard drive left over. The only time I've ever personally seen the "drive is in use by another application" error was when I'd maxed out my hard drive space. Rt-click your "C" drive (or, the drive you've written your .ISO's to) and select "Properties". This window will show you the capacity of your drive and how much space is available. If you need to clean up some disc space, the first candidate that pops into my mind is the copy of the files from the disc that "your sister now has". Don't mess around with that one anymore for reporting on this problem, use one of the ISO's that's sitting there already. Since no one can look over your shoulder and see exactly what and where this file is, please don't use it for the duration of this thread.

Secondly, run an antivirus scan; lets take a virus out of the scenario. If you're running Norton's, empty the Recycle bin. If you're not using Norton's, empty the recycle bin. :)

Thirdly, run a defrag; lets go the route if you haven't figured this out by the time you read this.

All the discs I've been using are brand new and just out of the packet so can't be a problem with the actual discs.Oh, yes it can! Media incompatiblity is one of the biggest problems for newbies. The Suggested media details (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=113&Search=Search&list=2#comments) out of the videohelp.com database are sketchy for your specific burner, but I didn't spend a lot of time looking; go check it out yourself. You MUST have compatible media or you're jinxed from the get-go. It looks like you should be OK with the Sony media, but the RW's, as I've already stated, tend to throw a wildcard into the scenario; even if you can write to the Sony RW media, your standalone also has to recognize it.

If you can play your Shrink .IFO in a media player (double-click one of your .IFO files and pull it up; play it to make sure it's a valid file), I'd shuck the RW disc and go with a dash or plus format. Make this first rip as easy as you can until you can get your project off the ground. Well, make it less difficult, this had gone past the easy stage some time ago.

I've only just installed decrypter, shrink and nero about two weeks ago and they're all the latest versions, I think as they're off mates.I don't understand the "off mates" comment, but I don't care if they were installed yesterday, uninstall them and reinstall so we can be sure that you're working with uncorrupted files before we continue. Uninstall Nero from the control panel, uninstall Decrypter and Shrink with the uninstall.exe files that are sitting in their respective folders in Program Files.

If your current version was an OEM version bundled with a previous burner, Nero will not work with a newly installed burner. Please state if this is the case, or not. Also, make sure that your DVD drive is selected in the dropdown selection menu in Nero, if you've multiple drives installed, this is a common mistake to make.

Make sure "DMA" mode is enbled in your burners settings. This is getting long-winded so I'll not address DMA settings here. Search it out on your own, or we can address it in another post.

Worn out yet? Please take the time to address each point in your next post. If we're going to effectively troubleshoot your problem, this helps, a lot.

To tell you the truth, after cleaning up your drive and reinstalling the three app's we're working with, I'd start from scratch. Pull up Decrypter, rip in File or ISO mode, send to file. Pull that file up and process in Shrink. Open Nero and hit the "Recorder" dropdown and select "Burn Image File" and run from there, but hey, I'm a sucker for the easy way out.

it is now saying 'drive is in use by another application' burn process failed!!
1) Do a cold reboot of your system

2) Post your NERO log of this specific failed burn

3) If not already suggested (Long thread, old eyes ;>}), you might want to run a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...
