Finally...

today we release the long awaited DivX Media Format SDK, theses tools allow you to create DivX files with advanced menu, multiple audio tracks and subtitles, metadata and chapters point. Just to make sure you get all the info to get going we add some documentation, the full XML reference and two examples, a simple menu and the full Star Wars Revelation DVD-like multiple menu. Theses should keep you busy for a couple of weeks! (The time we release our next set of software, we are on a roll now, we are not going to stop!)

The Tools

We are releasing two tools:
First the DivXMux tool. This is the Swiss army knife of DivX file creation. It does it all. Make sure to read the documentation on how to use this tool and read the XML reference doc for a full understanding of how to create interactive menus.
Second, the DivXCheck tool does just what it says. It checks the files and reports any errors that are in the files that you create. This tool will tell you if it meets the certification requirements and if there are any problems with the files you create.

The Example Files

We are also releasing a couple example files for you to take a look at and see how we created them. The SimpleMenu is a basic, fully commented example, it includes some videos of Gej and others fellow DivX employees going crazy (and going down !) on dirt bikes, it demonstrate just a simple menu and the basic behind the XML syntax. The Star Wars Revelations is a more advanced example and it includes interactive menus, chapters, multiple subtitles, and multiple audio tracks.

I wonder this will be an incentive for the matroska team to work on menu support. ;)

no gui for creating menus?

if you have to author xml files you can also right away author spec compliant mpeg-4 menus with mp4box placed in .mp4

mkv already has menuXtractor for creating mkv menus from DVD menus. Once again you could create the script files yourself and do a custom menu or I guess use your favourite DVD authoring GUI and then convert. Not sure if VLC was supposed to be able to play them back yet, but I could never get it to work.

mkv is only complex PC's format and will be never compatible with SAP ... :D

My mp4 or divx (not with menu at this time) are compatible with SAP ...

You might try VLC 0.8.4 it has much better Matroska support now. Although I haven't had time to test the menu feature (running out of time).

.divx files are spec compliant too. The specifications of DivX that hardware manufacturers can work with. I think there are even some players that can play these files already. Unlike the marvelous MP4...

One of the reasons that these tools have taken some time to release is that we have spent an incredible amount of time working with CE manufacturers to ensure that all DivX Ultra Certified players will be robust and reliable, and this has involved perhaps the most thorough certification process we have ever performed.

So yes, DivX files are spec compliant too, just not MPEG4 compliant (unless people think MPEG is the only body that can define "specs").

to be spec compliant to specs there have to exist specs. where can i download a documentation defining the specs for .divx? ;)

stephanV
5th December 2005, 10:12
So if you cant download the specs (there is an SDK though) they don't exist? That's like a baby playing keek-a-boo: thinking people can't see him if he puts his hands for his eyes.

no, but closed specs are different than open specs imho, for the so often already discussed reasons

stephanV

Then say the specs aren't open or something, not suggest that they don't exist. Or maybe just try not to mention MPEG4 specs in a thread where it is quite unnecessary.

Then how can he agree or disagree on the statement that they are specs compliant if they arent open?
But agreed its getting off topic as this is abou DivX Media Tools, and people can either use them, or well ... not use them. Thats all about it. ;)

The thing is, if you're following a standard like MPEG-4, you can't say that you're specs compliant with MPEG-4 if you make up your own specs. Anyway, this is getting off topic, I'm not posting more about this in this thread.

There is a tool called DivXCheck that checks if a file is spec compliant to the DivX specs/profiles. All the devices you see with a certified DivX logo have been checked against those (so hidden) specs.

Anyone can point me where on ISO, MPEG or SMPTE I can get their specs for free ? I would like the specs of the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray encryption. I'm sure there are specs for that.

Is there any GUI for DivXMux?

DigitAl56K

Not yet, but you could pop open your favorite VB IDE and build one :) I'm sure everyone would appreciate it!

Just added DMF support to StaxRip (using VB (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/) :)), supports vobsub but no menu features.
