Free DIVX decoder

am i mistaken or xvid doesnt decode avi files produced by divx6 encoder? i think that for decoding divx(6) files you will need the free divxplay package, or am i wrong?

I have a suggestion for DigitAl56K, since XviD is open source why not offer a free XviD decoder(or so something so it even recognises XviD encoded movies and plays them) also with the DivX package, just a wish, that would make it a lot easier than to go around searching for all the XviD builds and then deciding on which one to install. If DivX had a XviD decoder then there would be no need for hunting around, Thanks.

DivX can decode XviD (check something like "decode generic MP4" at decoder setup)

I tend to agree with dimzon. XviD is a great free DivX decoder.

XviD Decoding
Remember, if you want to just play back XviD files, get get an Xvid decoder. As an alternative you can use any generic MPEG-4 decoder, but most of the ones around don't have full support for all of XviD's advanced features.

Thought I'd share something about XviD decoders here too. If you want to properly play XviD video, you must find a small program (a decoder), then install it on your computer:

If you run Windows, the best decoder currently would be the XviD-1.0.2-29082004.exe.
Get this file from http://www.koepi.org.

Some users may also want to get Milan's FFDShow filter (though tommy you clearly don't want it - I wonder why?) Perhaps it is because FFDShow is not really based on XviD and could give you incompatibility headaches.


XviD Encoding
Those who wish to perform XviD encoding would need a pretty decent system.

The minimum requirement would be a 32-bit CPU computer, a large hard drive and decent RAM. Some exapmples of systems that will work with Xvid would be Pentium-III and Pentium IVs. Do remember that some encoding options will increase the load on the system.

The best option is to go for a system with at least 1 GHZ CPU and at least 256 MB ram on Windows XP. Oh, I've also heard that XviD is optimized for AMD CPUs as opposed to Intel CPUs.

Thanks for all the information, the problem with FFDShow is that it has too many options, very easy to get confused. So I just prefer the codecs only which I use rather than all the ones that FFDShow has built in, anyways thanks for your help.


As for DivX being able to decode XviD is like 75% true. There are some files which can only be viewed when you have XviD or a player like VideoLan. I even tried using 3ivx but it also crashes on some XviD files.

Thanks for all the information, the problem with FFDShow is that it has too many options, very easy to get confused.
Don't look at the options, just watch your video. :)

With a recent installer you don't need to do any or much configuring to watch DivX.

Im back, just found out that installing Nero takes care of all the problems, can easily decode Xvid, DivX and AC3 streams too. No need to install DivX or XviD, hehehehehehehe


P.S. Are the Nero Direct Show Filters good enough ??

I tried FFDSHOW, can you tell me how do I use it to decode, Cos now Im not able to use VirtualDub or TMPGenc as both of them won't allow me to convert to a VCD as the required codec was not found. Do I have to install DivX or XviD to decode them
