View Full Version : Does HC & QuEnc. work more efficiently with Intel or AMD processors

Like the title suggests, of the two, are there inherent characteristics in Intel or AMD processors that would make them work better, 64 bit notwithstanding, with HC encoder and QuEnc.
I may be in the market for a new computer and need to know if HC for instance is more optimized for Intel processors or AMD processors.

Celeron, AMD64 and P4 support SSE2 & SSE3 instructions which provide a real gain in video processing.
Sempron and Athlon support only SSE.

It's simply a matter of optimization, so it depends what machine hank (HC) and Nic (Quenc) use to code. If no SSE2/3 is used in the code, just integer SSE and MMX, an AMD might be faster and the opposite (lots SSE2/3 code) might also be true. And the best is that the situation might change in a few versions.
Get what you think is a good buy.

that's not completely true
semprons support sse2 from paris core and celerons only from willamette or later cores
moreover, there are amd opterons to support sse2

Well, that makes perfect sense. And as the situation may change in a few versions it makes it all the harder to decide on which CPU to pick.
BTW, the link posted by dancho was interesting. As well, the information by freelock7 and DK was informative on both counts of which cpu is sse2/3.
The gain in video processing by using sse2/3 mandates it's use for me.

SSE3 functions are supported by all the X2 models except the 3800+.
However I would imagine the programs would have to support the instruction set to use them, no?
Using CCE I get a roughly a realtime conversion ratio XviD -> Mpeg2 -3 Pass.
43 Minute encode time on a 43 minute xvid, with my 3800+ X2 1GB Ram.

I have an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and it does support SSE3
