I`ve searched the forums but can`t seem to find this question answered so if it has been answered before I apologise in advance.

Is it possible to convert high definition WMV files such as the microsoft demo`s into mpeg-2 versions, keeping the same quality and resolution?

I ask because I can use Nvidias PureVideo decoder to get my gfx card playing all hdtv formats through the on card decoder (Nvidia 6200a gfx card) except for some reason the wmv files.

I`ve already got the card setup as best I can with help from some of you via another post (a lot of help actually :thanks: )so it`s not that I`m concerned with now but being able to convert one to another if possible.

The reason for converting is that I could utilise the lower cpu usage the decoder provides whereas without it my 1080i playback uses 100% cpu usage.

Thanks.

If it is DRM'ed you'll have to defeat that. There is a long thread about it, use search. Other than that, there's nothing problematic about it; the DirectShowSource() filter under Avisynth can open WMV files.

Thanks :)

If you are interested, the latest version of VirtualDub-MPEG2 can open WMV9 files in WMV or AVI.

From their you can convert to say, MPEG-4 in AVI or even MPEG-2 in AVI (with the aid of FFDshow's encoder filters)..... Just a thought ;)
