View Full Version : Missing 5 mins!

A recent backup has given me something which I've not seen before in DVD-RB.... the picture freezes for about 5 mins yet the audio carries on playing as normal until the next chapter point. I checked the video files in the D2VAVS folder and that section of video isn't included in any of the files... what can cause this? It was HC encoder if that makes any difference.

what can cause this?
HC encoder crashed on this part.
To verify this, take a look at your Rebuilder.log and search for entries in Rebuild phase which say "Possible dropped frames".

Is your computer Overclocked by any chance?
I have found that OC'ing and HC cause dropped frames.
I have 4 computers at home, I overclock all of them. (I like that)
I have found that if any of the 4 PC's are OC'd by 21% or more I get dropped frames on most encodes. All 4 PC's at 20% OC or less, I DO NOT get dropped frames.
This happens with both CCE 2.7 and HC. I did not try on any other encoders.
FYI.
With CCE 2.67 I did not get dropped frames even with a OC of 30% :confused:

Yup, Possible dropped frame(s) [ 4943 ] noted in this segment, continuing...
And no, the PCs not overclocked. So what can cause this? Should I reprocess again? Do I need to do the whole disc again? Is there anyway to get DVD-RB to shout this error at me so I don't miss it again?!

Hard to answer, if the PC isn't overclocked maybe a overheating problem for example. When did you clean your CPU fan last time? Maybe this is the right moment to do this. ;)

If this is the only segment, where you got dropped frames I wouldn't reencode the whole movie. Just made a test, you can try this.
1) Open your Rebuilder.ecl in your D2VAVS directory with a text editor (like Notepad) and scroll down until you find the part which corresponds with your dropped frames segment.
2) Open your HC.ini in your D2VAVS directory with a text editor and copy the values which you find in ecl into HC.ini like as an example
*INFILE E:\KDW_RB_HC_ORIGINAL_MATRIX\D2VAVS\V02004100002023.avs
*OUTFILE E:\KDW_RB_HC_ORIGINAL_MATRIX\D2VAVS\V02004100002023.m2v
*BITRATE 3944 <= vbr_brate_avg=3944 in your Rebuilder.ecl
*MAXBITRATE 7802 <= vbr_brate_max=7802 in your Rebuilder.ecl
Save => Close
3) Go to your RB program folder, make a shortcut of HCbatch_016.exe, rightclick on the shortcut => Properties => change ...HCbatch_016.exe in
...HCbatch_016.exe -ini E:\KdW_RB_HC_original_Matrix\D2VAVS\HC.ini => OK
(of course you have to take your directories not mine ;))
4) Doubleclick on this shortcut.
5) When encoding is done rerun rebuild phase. :)
Is there anyway to get DVD-RB to shout this error at me so I don't miss it again?!
Always take a look at Rebuilder.log first! :cool:

Rippraff - that worked, thats a lot! Thats the first time in over 100 back-ups that thats happened. Because DBD-RB went ahead and burnt the DVD, I never thought to check the logs. I guess in this case, I could have done with DVD-RB throwing up a message box saying "Rebuild failed - Abort or re-process?". Maybe a good idea for the future?!

In my opinion it would be better to have a check during the encode phase if all frames of the segment have been processed and start again if they haven't.
There is already an implemented check if encoder crashs during analyzing phase (vaf in CCE not sure about HC), a second and third attempt will follow. Only if CCE fails for three times in a row encoding will be cancelled.

It would be a lot easier with RME :D

Of course! I could have just re-encoded a small segment! Never mind!

I would agree with this, if your RME which I like a lot :) would work in the right manner for testing. ;)
But as I've reported here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=717760#post717760) two months ago the bitrates compare RB and RME are different and if I'm doing a VBR encode I would like to do this as well with a single segment instead of OPV. ;)
By the way I'm sure there might be easier ways, but this was one which I've tested and worked well.

Sorry... I completly forgot about you :(
I need to know your exact config on Rebuilder... are you using RB-Opt?
I've been doing several tests and everything works fine, sometimes there's small differences on the bitrate but nothing that will make any better or worst results.

I have encountered the same problem with older builds (forgot what version now) but I'm using CCE. and my PC is running at stock.

Why did people complain? Because I didn't get a warning, DVD-RB went ahead and wrote the DVD, which is now in the bin! I'd rather be told if something went wrong!

You have been told.
This is the reason log file are created...
For many valid reasons it could be a bad idea to stop the rebuild process, with some modal dialog with the user, whenever some missing frames are detected.
The important is that the user is informed about the detected condition, and that this condition could cause anomalous behaviours.
This is already done by DVD-RB

I had the dropped frames trouble while encoding "Eyes Wide Shut", with CCE 2.70 on an un-overclocked machine. I re-encoded only the required segment using HCGUI 0.14, with bitrates and other parameters entered manually (to match the values in the rebuilder.ecl file).
Nowadays I seldom go out of HC mode. I've not encountered any other encode with dropped frames; but in case I need to re-encode one segment, I manually create a new rebuilder.ecl file just for that segment using notepad, and run the encode via rebuilder. But being manual, there's a hundred different things that could go wrong if not done carefully enough. (I backup all files after the prepare phase!)
On a side note, somehow my eyes like HC 0.16 better than CCE!
