when backing up say a 1970's 80's movie even the original often looks less than perfect to me.
Using Rebuilder Pro ( even for movies that require no compression) am I doing what I think I'm doing if in Filters I write
UnDot()
FluxSmoothST()
UnFilter(+5,+5)
I'm using the first 2 to reduce random noise and Ghosting and then the last to try and sharpen things up a bit.
If this is just a waste of time would some please tell me - As no compression is required on a number of movie only back ups I could clearly do the job more quickly

If I may say, smoothing and then sharpening seems like a waste of resources. If you like the way it looks and can stand the time it takes, it would be worthwhile. I'm not very familiar with DVD Rebuilder, but if there's a "remove grain" as with XviD encoding, that might be what you'd want for your older movies.

I did try using (from the AutoGK installation) RemoveGrainSSE2.dll by simply placing a copy into the AviSynth plugins directory and then placing
RemoveGrainSSE2(mode=2)
into RB, and it did not error, but honestly I did not do a lot of testing and didn't notice any improvement from it. But harrysmith you may want to try this on your favorite old grainy movie!
I have always thought AGK's XviD's looked great and RemoveGrain is one of the default filters used therein.

Whether you are wasting your time or not is really a matter of opinion. Personally for DVD5 stuff I don't bother. I just keep the original untouched. Perhaps in the future some miracle noise filter will be developed or it will be re-released with a better transfer.

Thanks for all replies.
After a bit of testing with CCE Basic and HC I believe that for my eyes HC with the Fox Entertainment Matrix, Undot(), and FluxSmoothST(10,15).
Will keep on experimenting and try out the various suggestions made.
