A recently bought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and as with all my films immediately backed it up onto my PC using DVD Decrypter in case the kids scratched the disc. Well unfortunately the worst has happened and there is now a huge scratch running across the disc and the film is totally unplayable. My question is what is the easiest way I can transfer the backed up files back onto a DVD-9 disc using my dual layered burner? If I have to buy some commercial package I am happy to do that, I just want to make sure it works. Also what would be the best quality disc to get to ensure a good burn

Just burn it back with DVD Decrypter using the MDS file - it will create properly the layer break for you.

When I say backed it up I mean just ripped all the files onto my HD. What is an MDS file, sorry? Is there any way I can convert these files into some sort of ISO file, now that they have been ripped?

@sasmj
Hi!
No need to convert to .ISO. Since you already have the DVD saved in file format (.IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs), and you're willing to purchase commercial burning software, you can use NERO Burning ROM to burn a backup DVD. Just select NERO's "DVD-Video" mode, place ALL of those DVD-related files into the RED "VIDEO_TS" folder and burn...
You can probably download a free trial version of NERO Burning ROM from the Ahead NERO website...

sasmj,
if you prefer a freeware alternative, i would highly recommend using pgc_edit.
details of the program and how you can use it to set your layer break can be found here:

Many thanks to all. My last question would be, which media type would you recommend?

For D/L DVD media, the current consensus at this forum and others appears to be Verbatim DL DVD+R...
And that's what I use.

I used DVDD to burn the 2nd Disc "penguin capers" onto a Verbatim DVD-R. I created an MDS file and then used that to restore from. The problem is that it plays OK on my PC but not on my Toshiba DVD player. Do I need to do anything to it first?

You may want to use a DVD+R if your burner supports them. If you used a -R DL, you won't find much of anything that will be able to play it.

Jel- or anyone- could you articulate the advantage(s) of Pgcedit over Shrink; for creating Iso? I have a lot of movies backed-up in file mode with Decrypter. I've recently burned a few to DL discs using Shrink/Decrypter, and it seems to work well. But I haven't sat down and watched them all, through and through. Are there problems there, that I may not realize, yet? Thanks.

...well if you had managed to wad through those 16 pages of posts in that thread i linked to(;)) and in addition, kept up-to-date on the happenings of PGCedit, you would have noticed the amount of time/research/development that has gone into the dual layer burning capabilities of PGCedit.
basically though, one of the main advantages is that it allows you the choice of where to place the layer break, then correctly provides all the settings/conditions required for correct dual layer burning, so although you will still get a slight pause on a standalone, it will be at the location you set, and not randomly inserted by the burning program.
Rolz is also working closely with LIGHTING UK! on providing correct support for DL-R media (although it is still recommended to use DL+R).
