I installed QuickTime and upgraded to Pro. However, I don't have either QuickTime or H.264 among my codecs. VirtualDub doesn't show them either. How does one access H.264 then?

quicktime allows you to use the quicktime h.264 codec in quicktime! ;)

You can only use Apple's encoder through Quicktime itself. Try loading a video into QT player and then go to File->Export. In the Export drop-down you can pick Movie to MPEG-4. Then in the Export dialog you select h.264 in the Video Format box.
But don't bother :p.

...here's another QuickTime h.264 propaganda of misinformation victim...
use x264 or other "better than quicktime" h.264 encoders.
