I have not noticed this problem so far, except on my last two backups (prior to which I was using HC 0.16 test release 2).
The problem is, while watching the backup, at various places I come across a single frame that doesn't belong. The frames before and after this anomalous frame all appear to be in the right sequence.
This happens quite a bit through the backup... I'm watching my backup of "Doctor Who - The Five Doctors". In 25 minutes, I've seen about 5 or 6 instances of these anomalous frames showing up at random.
I loaded the corresponding encoded .m2v file(s) into VDubMod, and it appears as if the anomalous frame is in fact an exact repeat of another frame from about 100 or so frames earlier. Not exactly 100, more like 60-140 or something. The repeated frames do not occur in the source.
I'm just curious if anyone else noticed this problem, or is it something wrong purely at my end.
Details that might be needed:
-Avisynth version 2.55 final (reinstalled this about 12hrs ago when I first noticed the extra frame problem)
-Hcbatch.exe version 0.16 (latest release) (Best Quality)
-DVD Rebuilder free 0.96 (in HC mode)
DVD Rebuilder prepares, encodes and rebuilds without error. (Special error processing is unchecked)
Other details:
-Running Windows 2000
-AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (not overclocked)
-Asus A7N8X-VM/400
About the video source:
PAL, interlaced video with a mixture of outdoor/indoor shots, scene changes occuring quite rapidly at times, within a second or so of each other.
Method of making the backup:
-Ripped the DVD to hard drive with DVD Decrypter (3.5.4.0)
-Loaded the image into Daemon Tools
-Ran DVD-RB, and performed Prepare / Encode / Rebuild in 3-click mode
-HC 0.16 set at Best Quality
I have taken a couple of screenshots of the anomalous frames, and one or two frames before/after that... VDubMod saved them as .tga files, about 1mb each. I'm a complete n00b at posting to forums, so I still have to figure out the craft of attaching stuff to the post ;-) The .m2v files and the source VOBs are available too. I can upload them at 64kbps, in case anyone wants to take a look at them.
Incidentally, the data was pre-processed with VOBBlanker and PGCEdit; I removed the non-English menu items, and removed about 1gig of non-moving video (displayed while playing some music) and replaced them with stills. However, the VTS that contains the actual Doctor Who episode was not modified, except for being run through VOBBlanker and PGCEdit and sent out the other end.
My doubts (apart from "could it be HC"):
-Could this be an AviSynth problem, and has nothing to do with HC encoder? (I don't know if it is. I've never noticed this problem earlier with CCE/HC0.16tr2 + DVD-Rb)
-Could it be a problem in the new DVD-RB? (I changed HC and DVD-RB at the same time, so I really dunno)
-Is preprocessing the culprit?
I'm going to try encoding some of the segments again with HC 0.16 Final (with the same preprocessed source) overnight, and see if the problem is reproducible.
One out-of-place frame here and there is a pretty minor thing IMO. But I'm interested to learn more about it nonetheless, hence my motivation to post ;-)
PS: Tried looking into VDubMod to see what type the repeating frame is... so far it's either P or B frames; I'm yet to come across a repeating I-frame.
PPS: The first time I noticed the repeating frames thing was on my backup of "The Bourne Identity (1988)". That happened to be an NTSC source, encoded as progressive/zigzag scan, done using DVD-RB 0.96 Free + HC 0.16 Final.
