Hello there,

I currently reside in Florida but soon I will be moving permanently to a foreign country in South America. Unfortunately their video format is PAL based and here in the US we use the NTSC video format. On top of that the current there is 220/50hz and we use 110/60hz. Naturally, I have quite a bit NTSC DVD collection and I'm not sure how to proceed.

I have have some basic questions for the experts in the boards and I would be most appreciative if you find the time to help me out with this dilemma.

- Is there a DVD player that is compatible with NTSC and Pal ? As well as play DIVX, AVI or am I asking too much ? The AC/DC factor is not a big deal, most decent electronics nowadays use universal adaptors but please keep this in mind when suggesting a player.

- Well, I'm at a loss here but as a last resource I suppose I could re-encode the videos manually from NTSC to PAL but I'm afraid this might prove to be a lot of work and possibly add quality degradation. Needless to say I wouldnt know where to start doing this process although again, this would be my last resource.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. Any information you can provide I will surely cherish.

Well, almost any DVD player sold in Europe handles both PAL and NTSC fine, including those capable of playing MPEG4.

I don't think that they make different players for South America, so I'd guess buying such a player there might work; as would importing one from Europe.

When you say "PAL based".... Do you mean PAL 576@60i aka: PAL60/PAL-M?

Thank you, I have now updated the original subject in accordance to the forum rules.

As far as the PAL format I believe it is PAL-N 50 Hertz. Hope this info helps in helping me find the right combo player.

You might want to try the Ritech RJ-800DVX which uses the MediaTek MT1389FE chipset.

PAL-M is 480i like any other 60Hz analogue TV system.

Anyway, I've never seen a PAL DVD player that couldn't play NTSC discs. Your TV set might be a whole different story though - decent brand modern TVs sold in Europe generally can do NTSC, and a lot of older ones can do 60Hz video through RGB SCART - but SCART doesn't really exist outside Europe AFAIK...

I was thinking that as long as the player accepts 220/50hz, if it supports component output, I shoudlnt have a problem with a component based Television.

Oh, and thank you for the model recommendation, I will check it out.

Thoughts ?
