When you use AutoGK, you end up with a XviD or DivX encoded AVI-file. I want a DV-encodec AVI-file (type dvsd).

Is that possible ?

I don't know how to convince AutoGK to use a DV codec...

But you may use DGIndex to demux video and audio, and open the video through AviSynth (MPEG2Source), and the audio directly (from WAV file) in VirtualDub. You need a VfW DV codec to encode to DV.

Does anybody know of a simple way to convert home movies on DVD (vob) to editable (avi) files?

Tried to follow this and other similar threads, but I haven't been able to find a difinitive answer on HOW TO CONVERT a portion of vobs on (non-copyright) DVDs to AVI. Heck, I wouldn't mind if I had to convert ALL of one DVD at a time - if it was simple, easy to understand and practically automatic.

It was simple enough to convert my VHS to DV and just as easy to encode the edited DV footage for DVD authoring. Why is it so hard to get my video back? Am I missing something?

I did find one product, DGIndex from Xilisoft, for-sale with conversion capabilities that provided a free trial version. But it only worked at less than normal settings. However, the results might suit those of you interested in compressed file settings.

Now that I'm ready to do a 'final cut' - I thought it would be EASY to get the PIECES I want off the DVDs. Boy was I mistaken!

I do not want DivX, MPEG4, or any such compression, and I'd like to preserve what little AC3/5.1 sound that I did create.

The images are viewable on any player - just not 'recordable' or 'importable' via any of the hardware, editing software OR DVD authoring programs I have.

Hopefully there is an answer out there - and it might help other home movie editing hobbyists.

It's an older program, but FlaskMPEG (http://flaskmpeg.sourceforge.net/) will convert dvd files to uncompressed avi or DV (make sure you have a DV codec installed). FlaskMPEG is free and open source.

what i do is
- rip with dvd decrypter (free), iso mode
- open vobs with virtualdubmod
- use cedocida vfw dv codec, do a search on this forum to get a compile
(dunno how to handle 5.1 audio thought, i always work with stereo)
