I just did my first sucessful backup using dvd rebuilder .96 and cce 2.70 and although the quality is decent I was expecting much better. I have read people say thay the quality was close to the original. Mine is not close. Its more like a very good telesync. I realize that the quality depends on a lot of things such as the length of the movie. The DVD I backed up is sopranos season 1 disc 1. Are there any settings which can be used to get rid of the noise? I basically left everything default. I did a 2 pass encode. Do I need more? That seems to be the biggest problem as well as artifacts around people or anything that moves. Also I burnt at 16x. Is this too fast?

Watch out with Episode discs you have to set the steel space from extra options to 00%.
Good luck PB

You don't need more than 2-passes. I've encoded Blackadder series, which are in the 7-8GB range, and they've come out fine (given the source quality isn't that great to begin with).
Most people recommend burning at no faster than 4x, regardless of your burner or the media you're using - although of course using top notch media such as Taiyo Yidens will improve your likelihood of a successful burn at faster speeds.
Also, similarly to the old days when CD burners first came out - avoid CPU-stressing while burning (and encoding for that matter), to reduce the chances of artifacts and/or coasters.

Not sure I can agree here. With a modern 16X burner and Yuden000 T02 for example 8X will give the best burn most of the time. Burning slower than rated frequently produces poor test results. The disks will still play but DVD Speed testa K Prob ,,,, tend to show greater error scores.
Having taken all the time a trouble to back up with DVD Rebuilder it would be a shame to produce a poor burn. My conclusion is (1) use good media - Taiyo
(2) Use a good burner - my preference is for the BenQ1640 (3) use good burning software - Imgburn or DVD Decrypeter (4) Always burn from an ISO
(5) Burn at the DVD rated speed - neither higher nor lower.
