View Full Version : Matrix for 90% + backups

I've been playing around with a few different matrix and filter settings. Using CCE Basic and HC I have tried Encoder default and MPEG Standard. Now perhaps I'm doing something wrong but so far my poor old eyes can not see any difference with the matrix changes. As I'm typically watching on a regular 31" TV and compression is only down to 90% with typical bitrates of 3000 +

Could someone explain the difference between Encoder Default matrix and MPEG Standard and at this level of compression does it matter which is used ?

It is very possible that the encoder default is the "MPEG Standard". Different encoders decide for themselves what matrix to use when encoding MPEG-2. Selecting "Encoder Default" leaves the matrix decision to the encoder. Selecting "MPEG Standard" forces the encoder to use that matrix (no matter what it's internal "default" is).

One of the other matrices might show more of a difference.

Thanks - hadn't thought of that. Will try one of the higher bitrate matrix and see what happens

For a higher bitrate matrix try the 'Fox Home Entertainment' matrix.

thanks feedback - I have treid to find fox but no luck so far. Do you are a source ?

OK Have now found your 2 zip files but they are *.xcm and *.cqm and don't show up when I copy them - help

Hope this is right - just renamed one of them as .mtx -- will find out soon

No... it won't ork that way... Use RME... it has that matrix and it can convert .cqm and .xcm to mtx.

Thanks Rockas - I will give RME a try. However something has happened because I am now burning an ISO based upon CCE Basic with Main Feature Matrix ticked as Fox Home Entertainment.

Thanks Feedback and Rockas. I have installed RME and used the 1-High_High (4000+) Matrix with CCE Basic and no filters. This has given me the best results yet. The only problem that I had was RME complaining that msstdfmt.dll needed to be registered.

I'm Intrigued by the idea of extracting the matrix from the movie. There appears to be a different matix for each "section" ? Is it possible to apply a different matrix to different parts of a movie ?

Does CCE Basic support different matrices?

Seems to me that it doesn't.

Seems to me that it doesn't.

well now I'm completely confused. I can accept that it doesn't support different matrices if you guys say so - How would I know ? But If CCE basic is checked and Fox Home Enetertainment or High_high is check and no error messages come up and everything proceeds as normal I assumed that it worked.

So if I can't use different matrices with CCE Basic which encoder can they be used with ?

They can be used on:
CCE SP 2.66+ (Trial) - CCE SP 2.50 doesn't support them
HC Encoder
QuEnc
ProCoder Doesn't support them.

Well for your own piece of mind, try extracting the matrix from your just burned dvd and check it against the Fox Home Entertainment Matrix then you will have a definitive answer to your "How would I know?" question.

P.S. Try the Fox matrix with HC best setting and DC 10.

Thanks - even though I bought CCE basic when I started with DVD Rebuilder I have tended to use HC. This will make me more inclinded to forget about CCE basic.

Apart from DC10 that's exactly what I'm doing now.

The Problem is Usually found between the Chair and the Keyboard!

certainly is here. At least I now know why a change of matrix made no visual difference. The result I thought was best was one where I did not use undot or deen. what do they say about running before you can crawl ?
