View Full Version : How to best create audio for podcast/stream?

I'm very new to this but putting post here as it's audio specific.
Situation is:
1) A DVD of a 2hr+ meeting (no music, just talking) is the basis..
2) Want to create a file that would be suitable for downloading (even on dial-up) -or- be able to be streamed instead...whichever is better solution...ideally user would be able to select which option.
3) Have extracted a 3min VOB as a sample and used BeLight to convert to MP3...it created a file of 3145KB...which was at 334kbps, as I understand it... When I created a test (spoken input of 2 min) WMA file via WinMediaEncoder, I was able to select voice quality of 19kbps, which seems more appropriate given that audio on both is just voice, and output file was 250KB... I'm presuming there are options to use on BeSweet to get a similar tiny file?
4) Any other software to be used must be freeware..and avail for W2K, not just XP!

What I'm looking for:
1) Is MP3 the best compatible format for this? I've heard about AAC but does this play on many PC's without any add-ons?
2) Can it then be streamed, or how does one do so? Update: I uploaded my MP3 to my web site and when I access it via IE, it plays via QuickTime...fine..
Is this typical or what happens if one doesn't have QT? I have WMP defined as assoc with MP3 file type but how do I do so in IE?
3) What settings should I make in BeLight or alternative to best reduce file size but keep some quality...remember, it's just speech so not that critical.Because 3MB for 3 min is way too big given that my goal is to create a podcast type file of maybe 2hrs of input.

I think that's about it...I've looked at all prior threads that seem to apply but no answers found that appear to match my questions...thanks for any help!

Note that I'm new to all this so any options I need to set, please be a bit descriptive. I'd appreciate it.
