I need the appropriate software for playing DivX/Xvid/MPG/WMV all the usual. I used to do this with FFDSHOW & MPC in windows but microsoft is behind me now so a FFDSHOW equivalent would be just perfect. What are the possibilities?

What distro are you using?

Have you searched that distro's Website for media applications, codecs etc?

ffdshow based on the Linux programm/libary ffmpeg. There for the equevalent of the ffdshow iss ffmpeg. http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php
If you search a player try the ffplay(part of ffmpeg) or mplayer(they have mach relationships in disgn/concept and mabers).

Great! I installed ffmpeg and vlc (I don't know how to open ffplay) and they work great and all videos I've tested so far worked! vlc also seems to have more than enough options :) Thanks for your help!

The "Big Three" in linux/BSD are xine, mplayer, and vlc. Install all three and give them a try. You'll like one better than the others, but keep all three because you'll find one of them is better for some things than the other two. Xine is really good for DVDs, and has the best video card acceleration support. Mplayer has better h.264 support (at the moment). Vlc has... well, it has something. :)
