I just bought a Panasonic S97 - great picture for both original and DVDshrinked movies. The player is supposed to support mpeg 4 but not divx?! Does anyone know what type of mpeg4-compression this player use - in the user manual they only describes as "ASF Standard"?

divx = mpeg-4 asp video
mpeg-4 can be asp video, .mp4 container, aac audio and more
"asf standard" can maybe mean old m$ mpeg4 (aka divx3.11) which is not mpeg-4 compliant

SeeMoreDigital - I've seen the text you enclosed but have no idea what it means. Have some experience with Xvid, Divx but haven't heard about "asf". If it's a high quality format it would be nice to know how to create playable material i.e converting from mpeg2

ASF refers to Advanced File Systems, which is one of Micro$oft's container formats (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/asfspec.aspx). As far as I know "nobody" uses the ASF container, especially nobody here.
MPEG-4 (Simple Profile) sounds like Panasonic are referring to the good old ISO 14496-02 "visual" standard. As used by DivX, XviD, 3ivx, etc - So that's okay :)
As for G.726 audio, if memory serves, is tailored toward "vocal" audio and not music. And sounds bloody awful.
So the way I see it, Panasonic are expecting users to generate encodes with MPEG-4/SP video and G.726 audio and mux the streams into the ASF container :eek:
Which, in my opinion, it a total waste of time!

Thanks for the info! I bought the player primarily to get high quality mpeg2 output through the HDMI-interface. I'm quite satisfied in this respect but it seems questionable to use non-standard mpeg4 coding.

The LG DVX9900H and Toshiba SD-350E offer MPEG-2/DVD and MPEG-4 (DivX etc) and are both fitted with an HDMI output.... but no DVD-A or SACD
