View Full Version : Sony Titles Causing Pauses at Chapter Points

1st Bewitched, then Lords of Dogtown and now Stealth are giving me video pauses at the chapter points, both on stand alone and Power DVD. Using DVD-RB Pro 1.03, NTSC R1 of all three titles. Ripped with DVDDecrypter, generate psl, run through PGCEdit to create new psl-2 and run through PGCEdit again after rip to remove crap just like the guide shows. No pausing at the chapters on the cleaned up original version, but after DVD-RB the pauses are there. Doing full backup with no other preprocessing. Tried just ripping with DVDDecrypter and psl & psl-2 to get the files to the hard drive and then skipping the remove crap PGCEdit method but then DVD-RB gives me errors on the rebuilding, which I forgot to save or write down. DVD Shrink will not even open the movie unless you run the PGCEdit steps to remove crap, saying "failed to open vts_01_7.VOB The system cannot find the file specified ." There is no VTS_01_7 file to begin with. It must be something with these Sony titles and ARccOS protection but I can't seem to figure this out. My work around has been to just keep all the extras generated from DVD-RB and use DVDMaestro to back up the main movie, and then use IFOUpdate to put it back with the original DVD-RB extras. Then everything plays fine & there is no pausing at the chapter points. Anyone else had this experience ? what am I doing wrong or what should I be doing ? I don't have this problem on any other titles, only these 3 Sony titles.

I've done Bewitched and Lords. I use DVDFab on these ARccOS titles instead of DVD Decrypter; I see no point in removing all the ARccOS commands, as it leads to problems like this. A normal run through with DVD-RB and they play back fine on a Sony STP (S70H), PowerDVD, and IfoEdit.

Do what I do, and use AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter
Let DVD Decrypter do the ripping which its very good at, and let AnyDVD do the protection removal which that is very good at
As AnyDVD is updated very frequently when they find new protection, just update AnyDVD and carry on backing up your precious DVD's

Just a note on using DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD, it's probably a good idea to set the IO to ElbyCDIO in the DVD Decrypter settings. This step might not be necessary, but, it's been said to help in some cases.

After "remove crap", did you do the "Finally - clean up VOBs with VobBlanker" phase? This is there to solve Open GOP problems and effectively does a mock strip.
Also, you must ensure the mux and cell flags are seamless, but DVDRB will do that 100%.
Try the 3rd (VobBlanker) phase and see how that goes.
The whole rip can be done with DVD Decrypter - no need for AnyDVD/DVD43 etc etc
How to backup ARccOS DVDs (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56078).

Blutach, Yes I did the "Clean up VOBs" VOBBlanker phase as the last step of the PGCEdit guide for ArccOS DVDs and that version played back perfectly. It was only after DVD-RB that I got the pauses at the Chapter points. I even ripped the disc over with DVDFab Express 2958 and ran that thru DVD-RB again and it seems to be better, but there is still slight pausing at some of the chapter points. There is no pausing whatsoever with the DVDMaestro version or the original DVD after the PGCEdit/VOBBlanker steps. Never have used AnyDVD/DVD43. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this or if I am the culprit. Thanks .

Just curious as to what encoder you used as I am having a similar problem with pauses at chapter points.

If the this is ARccOSS protected there can be cell-command in it that junmps to 'nop' commands.
I process my R2 pall DVD's always as follows:
1) Use DVD-DECRYPTER, if it's going to give 'hard read-errors' that it can't solve, I switch on ANYDVD to resolve these problems, but first I always try without it. DVD-DECRYPTER can still handle most DVD's itself.
2) If it was a protected disc, so DVD-DECRYPTER inserted 'dummy sectors'
Then 2a, else 3
2a) Use DVD-REMAKE PRO to remove the ARccOSS commands and the first cells that contains 'dummy material' as this is undefined.
In the command structure that nowdays has a lot of crap in it to 'mislead' ripping software can can easily find out what the reasl first cell is. You can also simple chech this by using DVD-REMAKE-PRO's cell playback.
Again remove all ARccOSS commands and thye dummy blocks.
Finally remove cell command in the title that jumps to 'NOP' commands or others as these commands are executed at the end of cell playback and can cause the pauses youre talking about.
Save the DVD again in a new directory.
3) Use futher preprocessing if you want (do not do this step, if you have a 'problem' DVD.
4) Proces it with DVD-RB.
The dummy sectors inserted often causes problem because they don't conatin correct information depending on the tools used. So it's just playing safe to remove them, although a lot of people don't.
With ACrrOSS you often see stupid commands that in fact do nothing because somewere the is a piece of commands like this:
IF R[13] == R[13] then JUMP CELL 12 else.......
This is always true so the starting cell will be 12.
I always remove the command crap and the 'undefined'' cells in DVD-REMAKE-PRO.
I don't say it's always the case but if you don't remove them DVD-RB tries to proces them as real segments, what can cause a lot of problems.
It's not black video with all correct atrtributes in it as some people think of it.
It's undefined material that you should get rid of.
