Avi is not a supported file error with TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress

When encoding another av i get a different error message. It completes 50% and then stops saying avi is not a supported file format I'm using TMPGEnc 3.0 xpress.

Please could some one help me

some body please help. This error seems to be occuring on all of my avi files. I have no idea what to do

I believe that TMPGEnc is a commercial encoder. Have you attempted to contact tech support about the issue?

Second of all, what kind of avi files are you trying to encode?

Xvid?

Divx?

I've tried their website but haven't had any joy. I'm converting xvids

If you have enough space on your HDD I'd suggest converting your xvid files to huffyuv. Then try and see if TMPEnc will encode the huffyuv files. You could just convert a small sample to see if it works.

Why? I don't know. I just have a hunch that it might work. ;)

Other than that, I really don't have a clue why it does what it does.

What is the audio codec used for the AVI?

If the AVI contains AC3, you'll either have to install the TMPGEnc AC3 plug-in or remove the audio before encoding. You can then mux it back in afterwards.

at rev how do I convert to huffy?

At mini I think it does have Ac3 but i'm not to sure - I have a clue how to take audio out - I am quite new at this and I am following a set guide

any help would be appreicated

Are you familiar with apps like Virtual Dub?

You need to be familiar with them if you're going to convert to Huffyuv.

If you want to learn how to use Virtual Dub, I suggest reading Doom9's guides.


As far as mini's idea about ac3, I'm not so sure. Why would TMPGEnc complete 50% of your encode then stop just because you don't have some plug-in? If a plug-in is required TMPGEnc would tell you before your encode begins, not while your in the middle of it.

I agree it makes no sense, but I used to hit this same issue. I searched the web and found many others who claimed they had worked around it by removing the AC3 audio. Like you, I was skeptical, but I tried it, and it worked. Perhaps it was just coincidence.

In any case, to remove the audio, load the AVI file in VirtualDubMod. Select Streams\Stream list. Select the audio stream and click Disable. Go back to the main window. Select Video\Save As ... Set the Video mode to Direct stream copy and save the AVI.

Or just shell out $29 for the plug-in. :)
