Here is the situation:

My friend have a series of Korean Classic MTV Collection DVDs (6 DVDs). They are quite well-made and even with subtitles for those non-koreans. My friend want to pick out some MTVs he liked and make them into one DVD with a simple menu. So he came to me for help.

At first I used DVD shrink to select out the chapters (a chapter correspond to a MTV) of a DVD one by one and re-author them to 6 dvd images. Then I load them all in virtual drives and used TMPG dvd author pro to directly import all the MTVs (vob files) in and made a simple menu and finally output one new dvd.

However, we find out disappointedly the subtitles are wiped out by TMPG and they are still remained by DVD shrink. Without the subtitles we can't know what the korean songs were singing about.

So is there any better solutions out there to keep these subtitles?

I, too, discovered that tmpg dvd author doesn't handle subtitles. It's not your fault. As far as for a better solution for DVD authoring, I'm looking for one as well. I've had some success with ifo edit and subtitles, but the discs I create with it are eccentric in other ways (only 2x forward search, no backward search). Good luck.

Use MediaChance DVDLab. It can import VOB files directly retaining subtitles.

1) Staring with your source DVD materials

2) TMPGEnc DVD Author - Author clip AS ONE CHAPTER (It will be silent) with desired menu

3) Replace TMPGEnc DVD Author's "VTS_01_1.VOB" with source's "VTS_01_1.VOB"

4) (Easier than using IFOEdit) DVDLab - Tools dropdown menu - "IFO Editor - Audio" - Select the DVD TMPGEnc DVD Author "package" "VTS_01_0.IFO". Change number of audiostreams from "1" to actual number. Then, for each audiostream, enter appropriate information (# of channels, format, language, etc.)

5) IFOEdit - Save modified .IFOs and .BUPs (Cosmetic - Open modified "VTS_01_0.IFO", Select "VTSI_MAT" and change value at "[00000255]" from 4 to 1. Resave.)

6) IFOEdit (To fix appearance of subtitles) - Open DVD Shrink clip's "VTS_01_0.IFO". Select "VTS_PGCITI, click on "+" and then select "VTS_PGC_1". From "Subtitle color" dropdown menu, select "Copy colors from this PGC"

6A) While still in "VTS_PGC_1" - Manually copy Sub-picture stream status numbers starting at [0000001c]

7) IFOEdit - Open modified "VTS_01_0.IFO". Select "VTS_PGCITI, click on "+" and then select "VTS_PGC_1". From "Subtitle color" dropdown menu, select "Paste colors into this PGC"

7A) While still in "VTS_PGC_1" - Manually enter Sub-picture stream status numbers starting at [0000001c]

8) Save modified .IFOs and .BUPs

setarip_old,

Thanks for the instructions. But they worked for me only partially. I don't really understand what you mean by "authoring the clip as one chapter (it will be silent)". How are these two things linked? You can have no chapters (i.e. movie not devided into selectable scenes) and still put the audio in the movie.

Anyway, I replaced the VOB and made only the changes with IFOEdit (but the line 255 was originally 0, not 4), without touching the audio with DVDLabs. Everything seemed fine when playing from the HD with PowerDVD. But when I tried to burn a disk, DVDShink and Nero Recode said there is error reading VOB1 and I had to use Copy-to-DVD. And then, on my standalone subtitles work only for some 25 minutes. After that they are gone. I thought I should replace other VOBs too, but it didn't help. I only have subtitles in a part of my movie. What's wrong? Is it possible to explain it to "not so advanced" person. Thanks anyway.

Does "author as one chapter" mean that we should unclick the "Reading chapter information" box when adding the video?
