Hello, my hard drive on my Compaq laptop crashed last month and was replaced. My DVD burner is a Plextor 716-A (external connected via USB). Prior to the crash, I had successfully burned many DVD-Rs with Nero. I reinstalled Nero on my new hard drive and tonight was the first time I attempted to burn since then. It is only a data DVD-R I was attempting to burn. I use Windows XP. I had updated to the most recent version of Nero.
I should mention I have a no longer functional TEAC CD burner / DVD reader. I have to uninstall it to use the Plextor for burning.

Several seconds into burning:
Plextor 716-A
SCSI Command Aborted
Plextor 716-A \ H2 T0
error occured
Plextory 716-A \ H2 T0
Could not perform end of disc-at-once

What do I do to fix this?

Google "SCSI Command Aborted" and you'll get lots and lots of help.

Change the enclosure for one that actually works, update the enclosures firmware etc.

Some people have more luck using firewire.

I followed this topic for ages at my old DVD Decrypter forum and we never found a proper fix for it.

The timeout the I/O command is supposed to use (specified by the program) is totally ignored and another one set at about 10 seconds takes over. We never found out where this timeout was coming from. Be it software, driver or hardware.

The thing I don't understand was until my old hard drive crashed, Nero worked perfectly fine! I was even lucky enough to burn crucial data before it totally crashed onto a DVD-R.

Do you also have Roxio installed? If so, remove either Roxio or Nero.

Does your laptop properly recognize the Plextor when it's connected? Double-check the drive type to make sure it's not still using the driver or settings for the TEAC.

Did you ever Google and read as I suggested? I quickly found dozens of various forum threads on the same problem.

The afterdawn thread hasn't helped so far. I only have Nero and WinDVD (which didn't work before for buring because it doesn't recognize the Plextor). I had to re-install all my software on my new hard drive.

As far as I know, it properly recognizes the plextor. How should I check per your recommendation?

Make sure the drive identity matches in Nero - there is a string of numbers and letters after the drive letter when you select it. If it doesn't match the drive, it may not have identified it correctly. If it doesn't, close Nero and go to Device Manager, right-click the drive and select Remove, then refresh it, at which point it should identify it. Then retry Nero. If you can't tell or don't know if it's right or not, remove it in Device Manager and refresh anyway - it can't hurt anything.

I did a cursory scan of a few of the threads I found with Google, most of which had several solutions given different scenarios.

The drive mentioned in Nero is correct. I will check the other options. I really wish they didn't up Service Pack 2 on my computer, since I don't know how to get rid of it myself given I didn't add it - none of the methods microsoft gives work.

I'm not sure why you'd want to remove SP2, or why you'd think it's part of your problem. In any case, it should be removable through Add/Remove programs unless the uninstall information was deleted.

Now having SP 2 is one of the differences between my system pre-hard drive crash and now - I can't think of anything else that is causing these problems that I previously never had. Unfortunately, SP2 doesn't appear in the list of programs/updates but is listed when I click on system. Pre-crash, I burned 40+ DVD-Rs. Post crash - 3 coasters and 0 succesful burns so far.

It sounds like someone installed a Windows package that contains SP2 instead of just updating it. Either way, I don't see that being your problem, otherwise there'd be a lot more people with the same complaint.

Read this thread (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=107480) first and eliminate that problem. As it indicates, if your drive is showing as a SCSI device you could get the error.

Also try making an .iso image on your drive with Nero instead of burning, then using DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to burn the .iso image. If there's an error, post that exactly word-for-word and include the log.

Device manager lists my DVD burner as:
Plextor DVDR PX-716A USB Device.

I tried update driver on all the listings under IDE/ATAPI Controllers. None were more recent that what is installed.

I am hoping Nero can give me some insight. I can't burn a DVD onto my hard drive yet - I will need to free up more space.

Thanks for all the help so far.
