strange ghosting on PAL source

Progressive PAL, captured from analogue cable-TV, using a Hauppauge PVR350 (hardware mpeg2 encoder):

Note the weird ghosting that is most noticable inside their faces. What on earth is it? And more important: what could I try using to clean it up? I've had this with all of my captures.

from the look of it, it's been temporal-smoothed with far too high a threshold. this is relatively common with film-shot or ex-analog sources, and i'm sure once you can spot the effect you'll see it everywhere (hint: satellite sources, particularly news footage or delayed sports events).

As you have a hardware MPEG2 encoder card, you could try disabling the filtering. Hauppauge Tweak Tool can help you with that.

Hmmm, the options to disable filters in the Hauppauge Tweak Tool are only available for the 150/500 cards. I guess I'll have to search some Hauppauge forums for a manual register tweak, if there is one.
