Sorry but no!
You'll have to re-encode your MPEG-4 file to have contain no more than 720x576 (414,720 total) pixels!
Or.... you could buy yourself a new player that can handle more pixels. Effectively, any device fitted with Sigma's EM8620L chip-set should do ;)

what software to re-encode

First - Any re-encoding will mean a drop in quality.
Second - There is no quick way of doing this sort of this
Third - Depending on how valuable your source is to you, will dictate how much effort you are willing to spend on re-encoding it.
May I ask what application you used to generate the encode in the first place. As it may be possible to use the same application to re-encode it?

If I read this correctly, pace508 has a software player problem, not a hardware player problem: ...windows says resolution to high and will not play in divx playerIf that's the case, use a different software player, Doom9 has many for download. Lots of people here love Media Player Classic, ZoomPlayer, or BSPlayer.

Ooops...... I think you're right
I read the term "DivX Player" to mean a hardware player.... and not a software player!
So yes... as jggimi has just mentioned.... try a different software player!
Sorry about that guys.

@pace508, Please read Forum rule #6. No one is playing moral police here. You can download whatever you want, we just can't provide help for them here or discuss them here. This is to protect the forum. Thanks.
The moment someone starts a thread with "I have a 960x528 file..." or "I got a 960x528 file..", it is quite evident that he doesn't have a clue how that file got generated in the first place and hence any further discussion would violate Rule #6.
