My coworker loves DVD2One. Here is the same frame from his transcode:
not only dvd2one looks horrible:

Edit: Is there a way to save a single frame with VirtualDub?
i use vdMOD for this task
=> video => snapshot source frame

Sunhillow,
the source and the encoded pictures have few differences, very good.
the problem is that using my ntsc source the screen is different and is (B) frame.as you wrote, the positions can never be the same.
if you can't see differences between the pictures in your system with the pictures hosted then something is wrong because i see differences.
my pictures from source or from shrink have more contrast, can't you see that?if don't,better we forget the comparisons ok?
thanks.
:)
DK,
i know what you mean,i saw everything in the link.
but you read my reasons....
the problem is not only the result but the sources.each source without encode have different contrast and we can't compare differents types of sources, right? here is impossible to find SWIII in pal and if anyone could post here all from ntsc or all from pal(source, aqe and shrink) we will compare the results.
remember that we are searching together good results and this little issues are only giving problems,no solutions.
thank you too!

raquete,
both images of my last post show more than 70000 unique colours. My first suspicion was that it was downsampled to 16 bit, but it was not.
No, I can't see differences between the display in VirtualDub and the hosted screenshots.

Sunhillow,
it's not differences between the display in VirtualDub and the hosted screenshots because your result came from your source.
is the differences between your source and my source.
click in the links to open each picture in one new page and maximize
this is your screenshot from the source pal:

this is my screenshot form the source ntsc:

encrease the contrast and bright of your monitor or select sRGB. ;)
comparing the sources, can't you see that your screenshot is a little washed and mine have more contrast?

Once I heard that Region 1 transfers are made from the film studios' harddisks while others are transferred from a "true" film. Don't know if this is always true, but it might explain the worse quality of my source.

great Sunhillow, :goodpost:
now you understand me,we can't compare.
you have good encodes with your source and i will get good encodes too with my source in next future using aqe(i will).
i don't know if i'm right: we see posts showing good results from ntsc sources and in the other side, using the same movie pal, users don't like the results.(and vice-versa)
thank you very much, all is clear now.
good encodes.

Well, I completed the first disc of my new Doctor Who boxset with AQE (4 pass with QMatOp). It was indeed much faster at around 6-7 hours vs 12 with the previous version. On the whole, its a very good encode, although looking close on my 32" TV reveals some minor blocking/background 'movement' on walls, dark surfaces etc.
I also did a Gladiator test against Procoder (mastering quality) but again, although AQE was good, it didn't beat Procoder in some scenes (again, mostly darker areas revealing some blocking). Just out of interest SAPSTAR, where do you see this encoder fitting in with the existing encoders? Is it meant to be a CCE/Procoder beater, or just a good encoder? I take it theres more optimisations/features to come?

Well it's supposed to be a FREE replacement for CCE, plus I want to obtain the best quality at low bitrates as CCE is really bad at them....About Procoder, I dont really like it, you cant tweak your matrices but its better than CCE at low bitrates.
About the "blocking" you had I didn't get it with my last version, but I didn't run some many tests up to now...But I noticed that on TVs which are not correctly tuned (brightness/contrast) blocks are visible even on some "originals". As QMatOp uses DCTune which is based on the perceptual vision it may explain it ?!?

out of three tests i did
one came out as 4.35 - ok
one come out as 4.38 - not good
one come out as 4.40 - also not good
after looking at the logs even when using 8 passes (which is a smidge overkill i know) there was 1.7% per segment error so oversizing was an issue.
Although the results were good the sizing is still an issue

SAPSTAR, I think the TV is OK as the original is fine. I guess the main issue with the original is a bit of 'grain' in the dark areas, and I think thats where the encoding difficulty happens. On walls with shadows for example, it looks like very small blocks moving around! On the whole though, the quality is great. Also, if this helps:
- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 52.7%
- Overall Bitrate : 2,726Kbs
- Space for Video : 3,549,124KB
- HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 2,985/819/2,726 Kbs
Is that the kind of reduction level/bitrates you were testing with?

@carpo : Did you use the default settings for DVDRB or did you change the target size setting ?!? (BTW 4.38 is still good)
@rendez2k : Yep that's definitly the kind of encode I'm testing/aiming

only thing i have changed its matrice, all other options are left as is and as was when installed :)
4.38 is smidge too big for the discs im using according to imgburn only by a few hundred sectors from what i recall

Do you recommend to use the standard or a special setting?
I've made a test two days ago with AQE and it came out at 4.51 GB but this with CCETargetSectors=2263000 which runs perfectly with CCE SP 2.70.2.1. (BTW 4.38 is still good)
If your lucky with DVD-R but definitely not with DVD+R. ;)

@carpo && Rippraff : CCETargetSectors=2263000 can work depending on the movie, I know that jdobbs highly recommends to keep the default size, because he chose the value which allows a good sizing whatever the movie is and whatever the encoder is.
Something else , which version of AQE are you using ?! I highly recommend the very last version 0.32.0.1...it's really better than the official 0.31b.
@Carpo : could you check if you set CCETargetSectors in you .ini ?!
I ask all those questions, because I had no sizing pbs on all the last encodes I did, with the latest version(0.32.0.1) of AQE + the default CCETargetSectors, I always ended between 4.30 and 4.35 !?!

Sorry forgotten, I've used newest version 0.32.0.1.
For the next test I'll leave TargetSectors at default value. ;)

the latest testrun using 0.32b gave me a final size of 4.36gb

!
i know for fact it inst as i never use such a setting - i leave all settings as is when i nstall dvdrb
i use cce and hc mainly (although hc has made some slightly over size)
i never use targetsectors as this can cause issues

Me too!! :) (and I've done 04 - four - projects with this AQE release). I got perfect final DVD size and quality!!
Projects already completed (JFYI):
- Robots;
- National Treasure;
- The cat in the hat;
- Bratz Rock Angelz.
Screenshots got from "Robots" - original & backed up DVD (last AQE beta + RB Pro 1.03): (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=741443#post741443)

Hi there....I'm still alive !
Here is a new version, the RC should be improved again, it was close from perfect, but I still had some rare oversize, for example with an old french movie (UN COUP FUMANT), with the 0.32.0.1 I finished at 4.43GB, with this one I finished at 4.26G, a bit undersized but nothing major....
I still have an idea I want to implement in the RC and the Multipass RC....maybe next version :D No improvement in this version for OPV....no time to work on it...yet. But the test PC is close to be finished, I bought all parts except the monitor...I already received the motherboard. :p
Remember each time you report a pb, please share your log file(s) with rapidshare...thx.
