View Full Version : Customizing XviD for AutoGK

Hi!

AutoGK is a fine piece of work! Just what I was looking for since Vidomi expired!

In the FAQ it is said that AutoGK uses the best settings for the video codec. But what is the "best" setting is so very much a personal thing in my opinion. (I read about some pros in encoding-business, who use minQuantizers of 1 for example, which only does waste space in the encoded file by blowing it up to the desired filesize. BVOPs produce smear-effects, if they aren't set to (2)1/1/1, for example. If overflow-control is set to something higher than 5/5/5 quality can suffer heaviliy and target sizes get confused and so on, and so on).

Couldn't a config-file or the like be added so that it is possible to customize a little bit? Certain settings used for safety-reasons (max consecutive BVOPs = 1 etc.) could be left out. But why can't I set Q-Type, I-Frame intervals, Quantizers, curve compression and stuff like this?

It's so nasty: Either I have to go through the complete Gordian-Knot-Procedure or I give up control over the encoder.

PLEASE :scared: let me control my computer :D !

PS: What are the settings used by AutoGK, by the way?

For future reference, Vidomi hasn't "expired," it just hasn't been updated since June 16, 2002. I can only assume its creator(s) are no longer developing it for some reason.

As for AutoGK, it has also ceased development, so there will be no new features added at least for now. That doesn't mean that suddenly it's no good; in fact quite the opposite. But keep in mind that it's "Auto" part is just that - it's to prevent those less knowledgeable in configuring such programs to make settings that would be detrimental to the quality of the end file.

The "complete Gordian-Knot-Procedure" isn't all that difficult, and since you can save your settings in profiles it sounds like that's your best option (until you're ready to try scripting for VirtualDubMod or Avisynth).

Ah, too bad, but thanks for the reply.

BTW: "Expired" referred to Vidomi not supporting XviD 1.x.x, sorry for suggesting something else. Actually I still use it.

Hm, if you stopped developing AutoGK, there can't be done anything anyway.

Ah, yes: The encodes with AutoGK were of good quality! For newbies it seems to be a really fine choice. Thx again for developing.

Bye, Eruendil

PS: Well, actually I am missing the possibility of Vidomi to cut parts at the beginning and at the end (and in the middle) anyway. :sly: And this is so much work with GK... (Except if you cut the encoded file, as i just realize. At least that's a little less complicated... :) ).

Actually with GordianKnot you can easily encode one portion of video by selecting it in DGIndex pretty much the same way you'd select it with Vidomi. You can edit to your heart's content with Cuttermaran once you've demuxed the audio and video with DGIndex, and it will reassemble them without re-encoding so there's no quality loss.

P.S. I had nothing to do with the development of either Vidomi or AutoGK.

Well, perhaps the one who had to do with developing AutoGK reads this. ;)
