when I playback a 720p .ts file (mpeg2) I get a verticle jitter, the picture shakes up and down ... anyone got any clues s to why ?

Which programs have you tried to play the file in ?

Do you have DeInterlacing turned on ?

I'm playing it in zoomplayer and it uses the nvidia mpeg2 codec (seems best performance on my system for normal video).

I'm not really sure how to turn on/off deinterlacing - in the nvidia codec properties film/video detection is set to auto and the deinterlacing method is set to VMR default.

Sounds like it could be worth trying other program/codec combinations ...

Hmmm I'm getting this verticle jitter with multiple mpeg2 codecs, I've not seen one where you can turn off de-interlacing, only where you can set it to "auto", could anyone recommend a working codec/setup?

thanks,

You can specifically turn it off in Elecard's Mpeg2 codec, and it is off by default in VLC . Also, is it ONLY 720p Mpeg that jitters ? Have you tried one of the HD 720p movie clips at DivX.com ?

If you don't get a resolution here, you might want to ask a mod to move your question over to the software player section.

I just tried the doom trailer from divx.com and that plays fine (I can see on the text, it is rock solid), although I can't believe they're making a film of 'doom' ....

SO that points me to an mpeg codec problem, or maybe even these particular files ...

i have seen the same thing and it is in the original broadcast so it's not easy to fix.
maybe someone knows a plugin for avisynth that fixes this?

SO that points me to an mpeg codec problem, or maybe even these particular files ...Most of the 720p (MPEG-4) DivX trailers run at around 24FPS and have been encoded at bitrates not exceeding 4250Kbps.

MPEG-2 at 720p runs at around 60FPS and has been encoded at a higher bit-rate, which should explain why your PC struggles to play them properly!

Processing high-def MPEG-2 streams is much better and more reliable when done in hardware ;)

The problem is not that the computer struggles to play 720p TS files but that some frames are 1 line up\down and that is very irritating

Right you are, SeeMoreDigital. It is an apples/oranges comparison. Here's a 720p 59.94fps Mpeg2 Clip for a more accurate test (11 megs) :

thanks for that clip! it's useful for diagnosis!

it appears to play fine - I say appears, as it's a short clip ... when the channel logo is visible it's rock solid, unlike my other clips where the same logo bounces up and down several times a second.

It appears the problem is in these other files I have and once they're made with this problem in them I guess it's never comming out !!
