It just occured to me that what we should be demanding of Microsoft is an OS which allows end-users to configure programs and services so that all they see is their own little world and nothing else.
I ought to be able to deny read access to the filesystem and registry except in specific places that they really need. And I ought to be able to prevent them from communicating with each other.
That would go a long way towards protecting me from various forms of malware, and also allow me to ensure that commercial software isn't compromising my machine or privacy.
