View Full Version : NTSC won't play in Euroland - faulty disc?

I have a Pioneer DVR 108 with 1.18 firmware and a Pioneer DV-454 player (not new but still ok).

I recently bought a NTSC Region 0 disc, presuming (and being assured by the vendor, a well-known internet company) it would play on my Euro equipment. In my pc it plays the opening logos as a slide-show and hangs.

I decrypted: playing the individual chapter files the result is a slide-show at x1 and x2 speed, and at x2.5 it runs smooth (but too fast, obviously).

In my DVD player it shows the menu and hangs.

NTSC is supposed to play on Pal/Euro hardware, right? Is there anything I can do to my pc to make it play? (There's no problem with pc horsepower, and it plays everything else.)

If it's supposed to play and won't, either I've been ripped off or I have a faulty disc, right?

for pcs it doesnt matter if it is pal or ntsc, unless you are talking about some pc/tv combo?

What is the disk and this "well-known internet company?"

well, your equipment obviously supports NTSC (did the TV flicker for a second when the disc started playing?) or you wouln't be able to see anything.

the disc is probably faulty. if you have demonstrable playback problems on 2 (very common) pieces of equipment, then it's clearly the disc's fault.

is this a factory replicated disc or a burn? either way, take it back where you got it and ask for a disc that works, while explaining your equipment and what is happening (like you described here).

if it's a replicated disc, then this is very disturbing indeed. i'd imagine they'd be having complaints by practically everyone who bought a copy of that disc.

[edit]

i wont pry as to the title of the disc or the name of the company... i'm guessing it's perfectly legal but perhaps embarrassing to tell people about, amirite?

Mug Funky - What's embarrasing about gay porn? I think you should be embarrased thinking of porn straight away, not me! :p

Wierd thing is it played once in the pc: once I'd checked that out I put it on the shelf for a rainy day, and now I'm way past the 7-day return point. However, it's worth contacting them 'cos if it's a generalised problem they'll not be surprised.

Thank you all for the help.

PS: Funky - I don't copy commercial stuff 'cos it's illegal, otherwise I'd send you a copy. :D

Region 0 ... I know like almost no legal DVD that is region 0 or better said without region code. Usually it's only HKs. Maybe it's something else for internet gay p0rn O_o

Thats what it says on the site (they make a big thing of it) and what it says on the box.

What are 'HKs'?

Anyway, since reading the replies here I mailed them and they're cool about replacing it; they said that no-one else had problems, but they would say that, wouldn't they.

I've backed up about two dozen "adult" DVDs. I don't think any of them had region codes, and most of them weren't encrypted either. And these were major releases from well-known US studios.

everything under the "director's suite" label is region 0 unless for some reason the client asked for it to be region coded (i haven't seen one so far...).

region 0 isn't too uncommon. but i'm sure it's nigh on nonexistent in the USA.

in australia region coding was found to be anticompetitive, and so almost all DVD players are sold without region locks. except computer DVD drives, because these are just imported as is. modded playstations are also legal - you can go to a weekend market anywhere in aus and mod your playstation legally.

[edit] btw, who said anything about ghey pr0n?

Hong Kong pirate DVDs that are endemic online and in import shops.
