i having some kind of lines artefacts..

the movie im encoding starts out with a black background then the logo summit entertainment appears. but before that appears i see faint lines kinda like an invisible artefact that is hardly seen, but not on the original avi. im wondering whats causing this??

There is something there, although I couldn't see it either until I knew where it was. Open up the JPEG in a paint program and apply a gamma change to turn near-black colours into midtones.

That doesn't look like a candidate for defreq.

darkfight, you say this is not in the source AVI that you fed to the encoder. Can you please post a clip of the AVI containing several of the frames that lead to this? Use VirtualDub; select a range and do Direct Stream Copy.

I'll bet you the source is letterboxed. :)

that has like 3 lines or so very big ones. this is 2 or 3 sec after that picture above, this is again the original .avi. The source is 2.35 or 2.21 ar so its letterbox although in the pictures you might not be able to see it.

First you said it is not in the AVI, but now you are giving souce frame grabs that have the problem. Please explain the apparent discrepancy. If it is in the source AVI, it's doubtful you can do anything about it.

Finally by encoding the frame grabs as JPG, you leave the possibility that the JPEG encoding caused this. That is why I wanted the AVI clip.

You were struck because you made it obvious via the filename that you were discussing downloaded materials. If you do not make that apparent and post a small clip then you will not have any problem.

If it is, in fact, illegal material again, please stop bothering us with it.

So, you haven't provided a clip and you've ignored my questions. If you want any help from me you have to properly respond to questions and requests for information.

sorry for not responding sooner, i was busy with something...
give me some time to split the .avi file. and those pics i uploaded are from the original avi. but when the mpeg-2 is played those aretefacts are there from the original avi and so with the horizontal lines that was mentioned first. the only diffrence between the .avi and the mpeg-2 is that the mpeg-2 has the horizontal lines. again i am doing something at the moment so sorry that i cannot attend to this. i will upload the .avi as soon as i can....hopefully the splitter will not add additional artefacts.

Here's how to do it.

1) Open your avi in Virtual Dub.

2) Set the processing to "Direct Stream Copy" as shown below

3) Select the range you want to copy as show below. In this case it's the part of your clip that has the lines.

4) After you are done, proceed to File->Save as AVI and save your new avi.

Click on the second picture that in my previous post, that's how you select the range.

problem with that way dragging that slider can go past your target end frame or time, was it really meant to be that way. you have to move it just a little since i only need a couple of seconds.

That is why I wanted the AVI clip.its not the jpg that caused it thats how the avi is! here is the .avi but the artefacts are less noticable the big lines are there but the cross like the one above is barely distinguishable. i have no idea what cause the invisible artefacts to diminish. any help would be great.

It's very simple. You have a black screen that has some unwanted artifacts with low pixel values. Coring just takes every pixel that is below (say) value 7 and changes it to zero. That makes it pure black. You can use the filter preview with "core to green" to set the threshold just right to get rid of your artifacts. (Turn off "core to green" for the final filtering.)

On your AVI a threshold of 4-5 looked good.
