there isn't even for mpeg4 to mpeg4...

Its not possible to transcode (in the sense of compressed domain transcoder a la DVDShrink) between H.264 and MPEG1/2/4, because the internals are too different.

of course its possible to transcode from avc to mpeg-2, it only depends on how you define "transcoding"

i define it as "encoding of the decoded input stream"

Why in the world would you even want to transcode back to MPEG-2? It makes no sense anyway, since you would just be decompressing, and probably get horrendus quality in the transfer, because as Kopernikus pointed out, the internals are very different. If you want to play your MPEG-4 encoded stuff in your DVD player then I suggest you just buy a new DVD player with support for MPEG-4. You can find them for very cheap these days, as Blu-ray is just around the corner.

I think you would lose a lot of quality in the transfer back to MPEG-2. I would just go out and get a new DVD player that supports mp4. I mean they are really cheap now, you can get a decent one at Wal Mart for $50...ok ok you got me. I am just mad because I spent all those hours encoding to H.264, and now tkalyani wants to turn around and transcode it back! WHY???

1080i has too many scanlines. 1080p is the only acceptable form of HDTV. Ridiculous amounts of bandwidth must be achieved! I called Shannon and told him that his "limit" can go screw.

It is funny how these handheld devices like iPod and PSP are all over AVC, and hardware DVD players are left in the dust. :D
