Rosewill RD-162 DVD+/-RW.
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 on an overclocked AMD Athlon 64 2800+ with the Asus K8VSE Deluxe mobo.

Completely messed up, the drive was working for me for several months, but around a month or two ago I attempted to burn a dvd and (in Nero 6 Ultra) the buffer started off at 10% and went right to 0. I've made about five coasters trying to get it to work. I've been able to watch DVD movies and read CDs in it fine, although sometimes the DVD movies will stutter slightly at five second intervals. One other odd thing I've noticed is that every time the burner light goes on, the HDD light on my case goes on as well, they're synced perfectly. What is up with that?

I have a Lite-On CD-RW on the same PATA cable, I can't remember which one is the master, I might try playing with the jumpers to see if that will help at all.

Anyone have any suggestions besides defragging the hard drive?

It sounds like a dirty or failing drive - perhaps you can persuade a friend or neighbor to let you temporarily install it in another computer and try it. You can purchase a cleaning disk for around $10.
