I encode movies to XviD on and off using the defaults, but are there any custom matrices out there that can yield better quality for sports content; i.e. wrestling dvds? The goal (in size) would be 2-CD 1400 MB.

Stick with H.263 quantization or maybe try Javor's 1-CD-matrix.

Hello TeeTee :D
Just to tease you :)
I would rather say " JAWOR'S 1CD MATRIX".

I backup many MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) DVDs and although I use ULR or LBR for my movie content, I have to agree they are too sharp for sports. Typically H.263 is what I use. Think I'll try Jawor's out this weekend to see if I can improve sharpness :)
