Hi everybody...

I need reccomendations for a DVD player. I have alot of avi, mpeg files that I would like to watch on my TV instead of my computer screen.

I already have a normal DVD player that can play regular DVDs. Is there a good one out there that is not too expensive yet of good trusted quality that can play me burned avi files without a problem. Also I would need it to be able to play the subtitle files like sub, srt, rar + idx...

Thanks in advance for reading and double thanks + gratefulness for any reccomendations.

HD DVD and blue ray DVD players will arrive soon.
So, for the moment the good choice comes from a Nero Digital (MPEG4-H264) DVD player. But there is not much of it.
Divx 6 certified is good too.

I got budget problems... so I'm just looking for a plain DVD player. Not DVD/HD recording player.

I just need it to play avi files properly. HD DVD/ Blu-Ray players are probably going to take a while before the price becomes affordable. So I don't intend to jump the wagon so soon.. I just need a good reccomendable player.

I have a DVP630 (=632/642 ??), which is cheap (I paid EUR 47 (=$55) at eBay, I read about $61 in the forum), although it makes no cheap impression.

Reads all formats I tested (even non-standard like 2 BVOPs in a row, but no GMC or QPels (as the manual emphasizes, so I didn't try)).

Only drawback: My high-quality-XviDs (even with max bitrates of only 4000) won't play without "staggering" at high-bitrate-scenes. This may be history, because new XviD has intelligent buffer-control. Still in testing...

Well, Divx 6 certified players will be available soon. The next generation will be able to read Divx above 3000kbs with menus and multiple audio tracks.
Nero Digital files too. Divx HD© will be available on the new HDDVD players in a near future.

... that it is normal for (all?) players not to be able to read more than ridiculous 3000 kbps ?

There is no "normal" - all players are different. Some can't even play above 1000 kbps. There's not one miracle player that can handle all formats and bitrates - if you're looking for one, read the specs to see if it fits your needs.

If the specs would say anything about VBV-Buffer size or bitrate-handling!

I bought a DivX-certified player and it should be able to handle 4000 kbps average bitrate (as divx.com says)!! But in some peak scenes (with max. 4000 kbps setting) it gives up...

Why does nobody develop a player, in which you insert a disc and it just plays... There might be different formats, but just handling some higher bitrates shouldn't be impossible... :(

MPEG4 requires some more memory and calculation power, but both is cheap as anything these days...

Well, I guess mourning won't help either. I'll try another model and see...

i'm sorry, i'm really stupid and new to all these. so i don't quite get everything that is going on here.

but most players shouldn't have a problem playing hdtv files right? how about hr.hdtv?

Most current MPEG-4 DVD players can only play std-def sources containing a maximum of 720x576 (414,720 total) pixels.

High-definition sources can contain anything upto 1920x1088 (2,088,960 total) pixels.... So if you want to play such sources you need to look here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84003) ;)

One of the good things about high-def capable players is, they can handle much higher MPEG-4 bit-rates!

No, and you may want to re-read the forum rules, particularly #6.

Agreed...

Srygonic, you really need to familiarise yourself with the forum rules. And try reading the "one and only" sticky in section of the forum!

They do (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBMC).
