Has anyone used kdvdbackup to backup their dvd's ?

does it work ?

how does it handle protection?

At this stage it appears to be a ripping utility only (no compression) based on dvdbackup. Not that this is a bad thing, I think there's a need for more focused apps as opposed to all-in-one suites. There aren't many simple rippers for linux and this one will make a good recommendation to newbies. It also appears (from a peek in the source) that the author is working on wine/dvdshrink integration.
