dvd::rip is a good DVD to (something) package. It takes a DVD and then rips it and generates either an AVI/OGM or a (S)VCD output. It's in most repositories. For SUSE, it's in the Packman repo as Video-DVDRip, and for FedoraCore, it's in the FreshRPMS repo as perl-Video-DVDRip. For SUSE, just use YaST to install it, and for FC, make sure FreshRPMS is in the yum repo list and do "yum install perl-Video-DVDRip".
