what audio type is better for mp4 container in terms of possible future hardware compatibility, and also which is generally better for mp4 container, in terms of software player compatibilty, and lastly, which is better to be used in mp4 conatiner (here asuuming aac is not used as it is giving too low volume), mp3 or vorbis?

i was asking in general, for mp4 cotainer, as u guys are more experinced with mp4 container. (or should i just use mkv (i am very scared of mkv container)!)

the best audio format for mp4 is aac. this doesnt mean that using mp3 is a bad idea, its just that aac is more widely supported
using vorbis in mp4 is not really a good idea and not widely supported

the low volume of aac when encoding with nero is neros fault and not the fault of the aac format

actually even after using belight with nero, i am getting low volume? i guess the ac3 file has low volume! never mind, thks guys!

The best audio format for mp4 is LC-AAC. In general consensus, HE-AAC gives higher quality, but LC-AAC gives pretty good quality too, and is the most widely supported audio codec in mp4.the best audio format for mp4 is aac. this doesnt mean that using mp3 is a bad idea, its just that aac is more widely supported

That's what bond meant, but he explained it a little erroneous :) And yes, vorbis in mp4 is nothing I recommend. I believe what Nero does is add a lot of crazy gain settings? Their dlls with BeSweet work great, but I never use their own encoder, because I also experience this attenuated volume issue with their encoder. Is JohnV around perhaps and can explain what's the deal with this?

yeah ac3s have low volumes on dvdThis is true. DTS or PCM have a lot more boosted volume. Why is it so?

Elias: Since AC3 supports several volume compression methods for decoding/playback (optimized for quiet/normal/noisy enviroment), authors are often forced to add different volume mastering info for each mode to the ac3. The stream itself has to have no form of final post production volume compression due to that, since with ac3 it "should" be done by the decoder using that mastering info.

thks for the info guys, well, i've just discovered pre-scale decision in dgindex, and i think it works great, aand i would recommend it to everyone who wants to transcode ac3 to aac!

Pre-Scale Decision Pre-Scale Decision is a more refined method of normalization than the one originally implemented in DGIndex (see Normalization below). It is designed to reduce quantization errors of Dolby Digital decoding. To use it, load your input file(s) and select audio method Decode AC3 Track to WAV. Then set your normalization amount using the Normalization dialog slider (don't enable Normalization with its check box, just set the percentage with the slider). Finally, check the Pre-Scale Decision menu option. Immediately, a pass will be made over the input files and a gain factor (pre-scale ratio) will be determined and stored for later use. This gain factor is such that when the audio is amplified by this factor, the highest sound peak will be set to the percentage of the maximum possible audio level set by the normalization selected. So, if your normalization is set to 50%, the loudest sound will be set to 50% of maximum.

The calculated gain is shown in the Info box of the Information Window and is applied to later decoding (when Save Project is performed), as long as it is left checked. When the prescale decision is complete, the Normalization option is automatically disabled if it was enabled and should not be subsequently enabled, because the calculated pre-scale ratio will be used.

Using this, i got amazing audio clarity, and proper volume too, so i disabled dynamic compression in belight as i had used drc in dgindex, and got good volume aac audio!

i don't need to know, using pre-gain in belight, i did not got much needed volume, but using pre-scale decision i get it.
