I just got back from future shop to check out the LDA-530 player as quite a few people, I read, said it handled practically anything they threw at it.

So I took 3 dvds with me, one with 350mb tv encodes of Stargate SG1, another with divx movies and the third with HDTV TV encodes of Battlestar Galactica.

The first 2 discs it handled...the 3rd one it would only play audio but no video. So I ran avicheck on the files and this was spat back at me...

File: H:\HDTV EP01 - 33.avi
Total Streams: 2
Running Time: 0:42:31
Index Chunk: Yes
Interleaved: Yes
Max Bytes Per Sec: 0
AUDIO: 0 - AC3 (0x2000)
Average Bitrate Per Sec: 256 kb/s
Samples Rate: 48000 Hz
Channels: 2
Bits Per Sample: 0
SuggestedBufferSize: 16000
Sample Size: 1
VIDEO: XVID
B-VOP: Yes
S(GMC)-VOP: No
QuarterPixel: No
Frame Size: 960 x 528
Frames Rate: 25.000
Color Depth: 12
Total Frames: 63791
SuggestedBufferSize: 185072

Now you notice that the frame size is 960 x 528. Is this the reason this player could not display the video because it is an HD resolution and this player does not do HD?

I know that the next player up in LG does do HD but I want to confirm that this is the case.

Thanks for any help.

Current "standard-def" capable players are able to handle no more than 414,720 pixels.... and your 960x528 encode contains 506,880 pixels!

Happily, it is possible to buy players that can handle up-to 2,088,960 (1920x1088). For more information look here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=646040#post646040).
