View Full Version : First attempt Dual Layer burn flopped. Why?

Hi all.

Another much loved movies had to be backed up and seeing that I have never try to burn a DL DVD I thought 'now is the chance to try'.

It failed miserably!

I used DVD Decrypt and "Read to ISO". The image was saved to a dedicated folder on the HD.

I then switched to "Write ISO" mode, selected the dedicated folder and the burn started.

Almost immediately, or at least within a second or so later, I received an error code with a bunch of numbers and the process stopped. I closed the error notice only to have the burn restarted again.

When it finished the burn, the disk was ejected, and I tried to play the newly burned DL disk.

"The disk was not recognised

The media was a good quality Mitsubishi DVD+R DL 8.5 GB 2.4 speed.

Any ideas what went wrong?

Regards

Hi!

1) It's been indicated that the safest way to use DVD Decrypter for the burn, is to select the .MDS file (which contains layer break information, among other things) rather than the .ISO file itself.

As an alternative, you might try using "IMGBurn", from the same author, instead of DVD Decrypter

2) Many postings at this forum and others indicate that, presently, Verbatim DL DVD+Rs appear to be the only reliable DL media

3) It would be good to know what the exact error message was ;>}

Hi there.

That was a quick reply :p

I think I may have chosen the MDS files, even if I didn't, the program tells me that I chose the wrong one, but "this time it will switch on my behalf", (a nice touch).

Yes it is too bad that I did not write down the error message.

I do have the latest IMGburn but as yet I have not tried using it. From memory, does the Daemon 'something or other' program come into the equation also?

There appears that there may be 3 programs involved when burning to DL DVD.

DVD Decrypt, Daemon 'something or other' and IMG Burn.

Now where can I find instruction as to how I go about (what buttons to push) to use all the programs. I have never used Daemon in any form before for that matter.

Advice appreciated.

Regards

No, there's no need to involve DaemonTools at all...

For burning to D/L media:

1) UseDVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in ISO mode to "Read .ISO" (decrypt your original DVD and write an .ISO image file to your hard drive)

2) Use EITHER DVD Decrypter (in ISO mode, "Write .ISO") or IMGBurn to select the ".MDS" file in order to burn the .ISO image file to your D/L burnable media

I just got a dual layer writer recently as well - 1st burn was a nice dual layer coaster.

Well long story short , the firmware shipped with the drive was outdated and once updated I have had no problem writing 2xlayer dvd+r's with ImgBurn or DvdDecrypter :)

We will see how the next 'burn' goes.

I have burned a few Memorex DL's, which WERE on sale at Best Buy. So far, they seem to be fine. Used Decrypter with no issues.

I'm about to embark on my first DL adventure. Do I need to change any settings in DVD decrypter? Under "ISO Read mode" for instance, I have filesplitting: Auto? Also, right now I have everything checked except Structure protection.

Thanks

Make sure you did not miss this all-important note posted by SetARip_Old, above:

"Many postings at this forum and others indicate that, presently, Verbatim DL DVD+Rs appear to be the only reliable DL media."

All of the others have proven to be rather "hit and miss" and the misses often seem to outnumber the "hits." The chances of success appear to be vary closely related to which particuylar burner you are trying to use to burn, and also the particular firmware you have installed on that burner.

Just wanted to make certain you noticed his comment...

No. In fact, the author of DVDDecrypter always reminded users to use the default settings when trying to do a dual layer burn. He also advocated using only Verbatim DVD+R dual layer discs, until the others get their acts together, or until the firmware catches up to some of the other brands' "write strategies." He also repeatedly advised against trying to burn too fast, and (at that time) recommended 2.4X.

This, of course, was prior to the time when he was forced to abandon support of DVDDecrypter.

I have always used the default settings for all dual layer burns.

Thank you for that BSpielbauer.

This will be very interesting indeed! I was very much into DVD9-DVD5 earlier but I gave that up when DL-burners entered the market. Then I started to wait for the price of DL-media to drop, but it never did. I haven't backed anything up in ages, but then I happened to stumble onto a website the other day who sold 5-packs Verbatim for €16, I think that's reasonable.
