Hello...
I've been downloading video editors like crazy and testing them out and I haven't seen a single one that supports ac3 files. Well, that's not entirely true. Tmpg Dvd Author supports ac3, but it's editing capabilities are seriously lacking.
I have received dvds to cut beginnings/endings, set a/v fades, etc... and so the first thing that I did was rip to a single vob. A suprising few programs support editing vob, so I started working with mpeg-vcr. I was able to cut and do video fades, but I saw no ability to do equal audio fades. Then I decided to demux the rips and ended up with an m2v (or something like that) and an ac3 file. The only editor that I've found that even shows ac3 in the list is Nuendo, but it requires a $700+ dolby digital encoder plugin to even open an ac3 file.
I'm aware that I can just convert the ac3 files to wav with besweet. That's what I'm doing now. It just seems like these would be simple things for an editing program to support. Grant, I'm working backwards to what they are used to.
