Newbie asks howto make 700MB AVI from DVDs

I have some DVDs, and I would like to make 700MB AVi's from them.

I would also like to make a low resolution DVD from a downloaded
700MB AVI file.

What software should I be using to do this?

Read the guides, and look for a program named Auto GordianKnot. It will do this for you
